Advanced Traffic Control Using RFID

Passive RFID tags placed in vehicles would be read by roadside RFID readers connected to microcontrollers that store vehicle information and activity logs. These microcontrollers would connect to a central server for data storage. In an emergency, RFID readers could authenticate important vehicles and override traffic signals, allowing emergency vehicles to pass through intersections. RFID provides a low-cost solution compared to other technologies like XBee or Bluetooth.

Advanced Traffic & Emergency Vehicle Pass-By Control Using RFID

Idea: Passive RFID tags are to be used inside every vehicle for identification. Every signal can be equipped with low cost RFID readers to read the vehicle information. These readers can be interfaced with microcontroller boards with EEPROM to save the vehicle information as well as activity log. All such microcontrollers can be connected to a central server for centralized data storage. For all important vehicles the RFID reader can authenticate their IDs and over-ride the current traffic signal priority. This way the vehicle in emergency can pass by using signal over-riding. RFID also proves to be a low cost solution compared to other technologies like XBee and Bluetooth. Moreover the RFID tags are cheaper and integration of such cards in vehicles is a very economical and feasible implementation.
