Sham Tutorial 2

The document contains 10 problems involving polynomials. The problems cover topics like finding remainders when dividing polynomials, determining if expressions are factors of polynomials, setting polynomials equal to zero to find roots, and expressing polynomials in standard forms. The problems require skills like factoring, using the remainder and factor theorems, and solving polynomial equations.

TUTORIAL 3 (CHAPTER 3 POLYNOMIALS) 3.1: POLYNOMIALS 3.

2: REMAINDER POLYNOMIAL THEOREM, FACTOR THEOREM AND ZEROS OF

1. When the polynomial P ( x ) is divided by x 1 , the remainder is 5 and when it is divided by x 2 , the remainder is 7. Given that P ( x ) can be written in the form of : ( x 1)( x 2)Q( x ) + Ax + B Where Q ( x ) is the polynomial and A and B are constant, find the remainder when P ( x ) is divided by ( x 1)( x +2) .

2. a) Find the constant k if x +1 is a factor of 2 x 3 + 7 x 2 + kx 3 . With this value of k, solve the equation 2 x 3 + 7 x 2 + kx 3 = 0 .

b) Find the values of the constants A, B, C, and D such that

x 4 + Ax 3 + 5 x 2 + x + D ( x 2 + 4)( x 2 x + B) + C ( x +1)

3. If

P ( x) x 3 + ax 2 + bx + c

is divisible by ( x 1)

and ( x +1) , and has a

remainder 4c when it is divided by ( x 3) , find the values of a, b and c.

4. The polynomial

P ( x ) 2 x 3 + ax 2 + bx + 36

is such that

P (3) = 0

and the

remainder when P ( x ) is divided by ( x +2) is 30 . Find the values of a and b and express P ( x ) as a product of three linear factors.

5. Find the polynomial in x of third degree that has values of 4,2,6 and 2 when x =0,1,2 and 2 respectively.

6. Show that the polynomial x 4 + 4 x 3 2 x 2 12 x + 9 can be expressed in the form of ( x 2 + bx + c) 2 where b and c are constants. Hence, find all the roots of the equation x 4 + 4 x 3 2 x 2 12 x + 9 = 0 .

7. The cubic polynomials P ( x ) = 2 x 3 x 2 5 x 2 and Q( x) = 2 x 3 + x 2 2 x 1 have the same remainder when divided by ( x q ) . a. Find the values of q. b. Determine whether one or both of these values of q result in ( x q ) being a factor of both polynomials.

8. Given that P ( x) = ( x + 3)( x + 2)Q( x) + Ax + B where Q ( x ) is a polynomial and A, B are constants. When P ( x ) is divided by ( x +3) the remainder is 12, and when divided by ( x + 2) the remainder is 6. Find the remainder when P ( x ) is divided by ( x +3)( x + 2) .

9. Show that ( 2 x +1) is a factor of the polynomial P ( x) = 2 x 3 9 x 2 + 3x + 4 . Hence, determine the polynomial Q ( x ) for which P ( x) = ( 2 x +1)Q( x ) and obtain all real zeros of Q ( x ) .

10.a) Given P ( x) x 4 2 x 3 + ax 9 , find the value of a if P (1 +i 2 =0 .

b) Given P ( x ) x 4 + ax 3 + bx 1, find the values of a and b if i and 1 + 2 are zeros of P ( x ) .
