PROBLEM SET 2
1. A stone is dropped down a well and 5 seconds later the sound of the
splash is heard. If the velocity of sound is 1120 ft per sec, what is the depth of the well? ( 353.31 ft )
7. Two automobiles A and B are traveling in the same direction in 4. A motorcyclist at A is traveling at 60 ft/s when he wishes to pass the
truck T which is traveling at a constant speed of 60 ft/s. To do so the motorcyclist accelerates at 6 ft/ s2 until reaching a maximum speed of 85 ft/s. If he then maintains this speed, determine the time needed for him to reach a point 100 ft in front of the truck. adjacent highway lanes. Automobile B is stopped when it is passed by A, which travels at a constant speed of 36 km/hr. Two seconds later automobile B starts and accelerates at a constant rate of 1.5 m/s2. Determine (a) the time when and where B will overtake A, (b) the speed of B at that time. ( a. 15.1 s, b. 22.65 m/s )
Believing that the driver of the automobile might be intoxicated, the officer starts his car, accelerates to 90 km/h in 8 sec, and, maintaining a constant velocity of 90 km/h, overtakes the motorist 42 sec after the automobile passed him. Knowing that 18 sec elapsed before the officer began pursuing the motorist, determine (a) the distance the officer traveled before overtaking the motorist, (b) the motorists speed. (a. 0.5 km, b. 42.9 km/hr)
and v are expressed in m/s2 and m/s, respectively, and k is a constant. The system starts at s = 0.5 m with v = 0 m/s and t = 0. Knowing that s = 0.4 m when t = 0.2 s, determine the value of k .

In a close harness race, horse 2 passes horse 1 at point A where the two velocities are v 2 = 7 m/s and v1 = 6.8 m/s. Horse 1 later passes horse 2 at point B and goes on to win the race at point C, 400 m from A. The elapsed times from A to C for horse 1 and horse 2 are t1 = 61.5 s and t 2 = 62 s, respectively. Assuming uniform accelerations for both horses between A and C, determine (a) the distance from A to B, (b) the position of horse 1 relative to horse 2 when horse 1 reaches the finish line C.

Two rockets are launched at a fireworks performance. Rocket A is launched with an initial velocity vO and rocket B is launched 4 sec later with the same initial velocity. The two rockets are timed to explode simultaneously at a height of 80 m, as A is falling and B is rising. Assuming constant acceleration g = 9.81 m/s2, determine (a) the initial velocity vO , (b) the velocity of B relative to A at the time of explosion.
