Science Inquiry Iodine Clock Reaction
Students Name:
Background: When starch and iodine combine a blue/black color develops. This test is used by scientists to test for the presence of starch in many products. The speed of the reaction is dependent upon the concentration of the chemicals involved, the temperature of the chemicals used and the presence of a catalyst. You are going to determine how one of the following variables affects the rate of the starch reaction: concentration or temperature. Which variable are you going to test? This is known as the independent variable or the cause of the reaction. Independent variable The dependent variable is the effect or result you are measuring. In this reaction it will be the time it takes for the blue/black color to fully develop. Rewrite the dependent variable. Dependent variable Your best guess as to what will happen based on your current knowledge is known as the hypothesis. What is your hypothesis for this experiment? Hypothesis Materials all groups will need: 50ml graduate cylinder for starch 100ml graduate for mixing iodine and water 250ml beaker for mixing your testing your hypothesis 400ml beaker for water Stopwatch If you are testing the effect of temperature on the rate of reaction you will also need ice and a thermometer. Procedure: 1. Measure out 40ml of starch in the 50ml graduate cylinder. 2. Make your experimental solution of Potassium Iodate and Water. a. You can use any amount of either as long as the Potssium Iodate and Water add up to 100ml. b. Record your mixture amounts on your data table. 3. Pour the solutions together and begin timing. a. Record the time of reaction on your data table. 4. Repeat the experiment until you have tested 3 different mixtures. Conclusion: 1. Graph your results.
2. What did you learn about your hypothesis? This is known as your interpretation. Science Inquiry Name: Iodine Clock Reaction Hypothesis: Independent Variable: Dependent Variable: Data Table. Concentration or Temperature Time for reaction Graph: 50ml Iodine / 50ml Water
