flame. What is viewed thorough a spectroscope and how does this instrument serve in identifying substances?
When a substance is vaporized in a flame, the electrons of the metal gets excited. When they return from their excited state to the ground state, its become a photon which produces a light. The colors are viewed thorough a spectroscope. The color seen is a combination of a number of colors.
#2
Is flame coloration a test for the metallic ion or for the nitrate ion?
#3 why do dry sodium chloride and the solutions of sodium nitrate and sodium all impart
the same color to the flame?
Dry sodium chloride and the solutions of sodium nitrate and sodium nitrate and sodium all impart the same color to the flame because they all have the same metal (sodium) so their color will be the same
#4 how would you characterize the flame test with respect to its sensitivity?
The flame test has a unique color for each element and produces high temperature.
#5 what difficulties may be encountered in the use of the flame test for identification?
Some ions may have no reaction and the color wont change.
general conclusion: 1)a student recorded the following results when testing three unknowns. Identify the unknown by referring to you data table: unknown#1 yellowish green` copper sulfate or sodium unknown #2 scarlet lithium or strontium 2) Several of the flame tests were shades of red. What should be done in the labatory to correctly identify one of these ions? To correctly identify these ions in the lab, the wipe should always be clean
