This is a delightful bookmore fun than being a Dungeon Master to a group of
high-level mages and thieves.A. J. Jacobs, New York Times best-selling author
of The Know-It-All and The Year of Living Biblically
Witty, downright funny, poignant, honest and . . . well, wistful. Anyone who has
ever embraced escapism will understand, and those who havent taken that
leap of imagination will want to after reading Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks.
Reading Ethan Gilsdorfs tale conjured my own Dungeons & Dragons and fantasy
experiences, vividly. R.A. Salvatore, New York Times best-selling author of
The Dark Elf Trilogy, and lead storyteller of 38 Studios game company
A fun, quirky, and fresh perspective for those wanting to know more about the
amazing world of gaming. David Brin, winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and Locus
Awards, and author of The Postman, Kiln People, and The Transparent Society
Ethan Gilsdorfs quest for himself leads through the fantasy world of millions
of gamers in a breathless adventure/quest/memoir that is uniquely contemporary.
This is at once a primer on the world of gaming, a self-help manual, and a
wistful meditation on the passing of real time in a (nearly) virtual world.
Andrei Codrescu, NPR commentator and author of The Posthuman Dada Guide
An orcs-and-all journey through geekdom, told with affection for every elf, wizard, and
Dungeon Master it meets along the way. Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks is for any-
one whos ever been lured by the enchantment and secrets of faraway fantasy worlds;
it gives a personal face to the cloak-swishing, wand-yielding, lightsaber-rattling
gamer in us all. Melissa Anelli, author of Harry, A History: The True Story of a

Delving deeper and deeper into geekdom, our
noble hero plays WoW for weeks on end. He travels to
pilgrimage sites: Tolkiens hometown, movie locations,
castles, and archives. He hangs out with Harry Potter
tribute bands. At a LARP, he dresses as a pacifst monk
for a weekend. He goes to fan conventions and gaming
tournaments. He battles online goblins, trolls, and sor-
cerers. He camps with medieval reenactors12,000
of them. He becomes Ethor, Ethorian, and Ethor-An3.
He sews his own tunic. He even plays D&D. What he
discovers is funny, poignant, and enlightening.
After playing Dungeons & Dragons religiously in the
1970s and 1980s, Ethan Gilsdorf went on to become
a poet, teacher, and journalist. Based in Somerville,
Massachusetts, he publishes travel, arts, and pop
culture stories regularly in the New York Times, Bos-
ton Globe, and Christian Science Monitor, and has
been published in other magazines and newspapers,
including National Geographic Traveler, Psychology
Today, and the Washington Post. He has also been a
guest on talk radio as a fantasy and escapism expert.

Fantasy. Science fction. Role-playing games.
Tens of millions of people around the globe turn away
from the real world to inhabit others. Movie fan-
freaks design costumes and collect Lord of the Rings
action fgures. Some attend comic book conventions
and Renaissance fairs, others play live-action role-
playing games (LARPs). The online game World of
Warcraft (WoW) has alone lured twelve million users
worldwide. Even old-school role-playing games such
as Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) are still wildly popular.
Who are these gamers and fantasy fans?
What explains the irresistible appeal of such
escapist adventures? And what could one man
fnd if he embarked on a journey through fantasy
world after fantasy world?
In an enthralling blend of travelogue, pop
culture analysis, and memoir, forty-year-old
former D&D addict Ethan Gilsdorf criss-
crosses America, the world, and other
worldsfrom Boston to Wisconsin,
New Zealand to France, and Planet
Earth to the realm of Aggramar. On
a quest that begins in his own geeky
teenage past and ends in our online gam-
ing future, he asks gaming and fantasy geeks how
they balance their escapist urges with the kingdom
of adulthood. He questions Tolkien scholars and me-
dievalists. He speaks to grown men who build hob-
bit holes and speak Elvish, and to grown women who
play massively multiplayer online games. He seeks
out those who dream of elves, long swords, and he-
roic deeds, and mentally inhabit faraway magical
lands. Gilsdorf records what lures themold, young,
male, female, able-bodied, and disabledinto fan-
tasy worlds, and for what reasons, whether healthy,
unhealthy, or in between.
(continued on back fap)
Forget FrodoEthan Gilsdorf guides readers
through fantasy lands far more enchanting than
anything youll fnd in Tolkiens books.

Thirty-six true tales of the desperadoes, gunslingers,
and bad guys who made the Wild West wild
Its wilderness notwithstanding, the Wild West was not necessarily a place to go in
search of peace. While many settlers were decent folk, the American frontiers wide
open spaces also attracted unsavory characters in disproportionate numbers, many
on the run looking for places to hide while they went on snubbing the law. Badasses
of the Old West brings together in one compelling volume tales of the thirty-six
worst (and best) robbers, rustlers, and bandits who shaped the history of the Wild
West. From the famous, such as Billy the Kid and the Wild Bunch, to the lesser-
known but still colorful and wicked Charles Brown and Bud Stevens, it compiles
the stories of the most notorious black-hat wearers of a notorious age. Here are just
some of the fascinating and forbidding faces youll meet:
Bud Stevens, whose murder of a cattle kings son rang a death knell for an
entire South Dakota town
William Quantrill, the terror of Civil Warera Missouri
Legendary bandits Frank and Jesse James
Cold-blooded Sam Brown, who sneered while cutting out a mans heart but
screamed in terror when the tables turned
Jack Slade, who was such an enigma across much of the Westa
composite of gentleman and murdererthat he charmed both Mark Twain
and Buffalo Bill

The authoritative guide to disappearing
insider tips, tools, and techniques
Want to disappear or simply hide your personal information from
would-be thieves and stalkers? How to Disappear is the ultimate guide to
protecting your family, yourself, and your identity. The worlds top privacy
consultant covers everything from tools for disappearing to discovering
and eliminating the nearly invisible tracks and clues we leave wherever

three keys to disappearing, tells you everything you need to know about
your digital footprint, discusses the dangers and opportunities of social
networking sites, and shows you how to disappear fromanyone who might
do you harm.
Frank M. Ahearn built his frst career by
fnding people who didnt want to be found
from philandering celebrities to a certain
White House intern (Monica Lewinsky) before
anybody had heard of her, as well as countless
cheaters, frauds, and bad guys. Using the skip
tracer techniques he developed in the process,
Ahearn embarkedon a secondcareer counseling those
who wanted not to be found. If youve ever fantasized

just eliminating the traceable evidence of your
existenceHow to Disappear is your guide.

narrative, Ahearn provides feld-tested tips, tools,
and techniques for maintaining privacy, as well
as strategies for protecting personal information

without leaving clues). Throughout, Ahearn shares
real-life stories of his fascinating careerfrom
nabbing adulterous celebrities to helping abuse
victims fnd safety.
An indispensable resource not just for those deter-
mined to be anonymous, but for almost anyone in
the brave new world of online information, How to
Disappear sums up Ahearns dual philosophy: Dont

Speaking Ill of the Dead: Jerks in Montana History features
twenty-seven short profles of notorious bad guys, perpetrators of
mischief, visionary if misunderstood thinkers, and other colorful
antiheroes from the history of the Treasure State. It reveals the dark
side of some well-known and even revered characters from Montanas
pastboth part-time Jerks and others who were Jerks through and
through. They include:

Touissant Charbonneau, erstwhile husband of Sacagawea

and foolish counterpartto her efforts for the Lewis and

during a nineteenth-century hunting expedition

Notorious cannibals Boone Helm and Liver-Eatin Johnston,

I chose a bold, iconic photo approach to illustrate a
complex subject about excesses in the environmen-
tal NFP world. The book was featured on the NY-
Times web site. I added to the package by designing
custom endpapers in Illustrator that were made up
of a subtle pattern of dollar signs.
In spring 2006, Christine MacDonald left journal-
ism for a dream job at Conservation International,
one of the worlds largest environmental organi-
zations. Soon after she reported to the groups
Washington ofces, it became all too apparent
to her that something is rotten in todays clubby,
well-upholstered world of conservationists.
Green, Inc. is a riveting rst-person account
of an eco-warriors travails at the crossroads of
the nonprot and corporate worldsone that will
shock anyone who has ever made a donation to
an environmental group.
NGOs that once dedicated themselves solely
to saving pandas and parklands today vie for the
favors of mining operations, logging companies,
and homebuilders. Among the most generous
donors are the biggest environmental scofaws
of allenergy conglomerates. Being a leading
conservationist today means (in addition to a
six-gure salary) scuba diving with rock stars
and partying with corporate scions and celeb-
rity journalists aboard gas-guzzling private jets
and yachts.
How do conservationists justify such deal-
ings? The most common refrain: being tight
with corporate leaders will help them change
their polluting ways. However, argues MacDon-
ald, the companies are beneting far more than
endangered species. While providing an essential
overview of the global environmental movement,
she centers her story on what goes on inside the
worlds top conservation groups, examining the
truth to claims that they have allowed themselves
to be silenced by corporate dollars as environ-
mental crisis looms.
MacDonalds fast-paced narrative ows
from carefully checked facts, her own powerful
rst-hand anecdotes, and interviews with other
insiders. A scandalous snapshot from inside a
good cause gone bad, Green, Inc. comes at a
time when global warming nears the point of no
return and more people than ever are awakening to
the consequences.
In Green, Inc. she lays bare the truth about the well-heeled life-
styles of the worlds top conservationists and their dubious rela-
tionships with the corporate world. This scandalous snapshot from
inside a good cause gone bad scrutinizes the dealings of:
Environmental organizations that together have more than
15 million members and operate in over 100 countries
including Conservation International, World Wildlife Fund, The
Nature Conservancy, The Natural Resources Defense Council,
The Conservation Fund, Environmental Defense Fund, Sierra
Club, Defenders of Wildlife, National Audubon Society, and
Greenpeace
Leading conservationists, such as Peter Seligmann, Conserva-
tion Internationals cofounder, chairman, and CEOrenowned
for his jet-setting ways and his nesse at cultivating ties with
big corporations; and Adam Werbach, the former Sierra Club
president, who defected in 2006 to work as a consultant
for Wal-Mart, which hed once called a virus, infecting and
destroying American culture.
E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., General Electric, Eastman Kodak,
ExxonMobil, Nissan, and Dow Chemicalwhich donate millions
of dollars to top environmental groups in return for their lavish
praise despite being named as among Americas top ten worst
corporate air polluters.
Christine MacDonald, a journalist who has writ-
ten for the Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times,
Dallas Morning News, and Chicago Tribune, was
formerly manager of the Media Capacity Building
Program of Conservation Internationals Global
Communications Division. She lives in Washing-
ton, D.C.

Employing strong, clean typography and a modern color palette - I
made this book appeal to the intended demographic. I also added
stylized grid lines to the photo to accentuate the theme and add to
the look of the look. The cover elements were carried throughout
the book to produce a cohesive, hip package.

Katie Brown is the young woman Rock & Ice magazine
dubbed The Best Female Climber of the Millennium. An
infuential and groundbreaking climber among both genders,
she began climbing at age thirteen and quickly dominated
competition at the national and international levels. Now in
her mid-twenties, she is a freelance writer and the author of
Vertical World (FalconGuides). When not traveling the world
as an elite professional climber, she lives in Moab, Utah.
Ben Moons photographs on rock climbing, surfng, and
other outdoor pursuits have been featured in virtually
every major national outdoor magazine, from Outside and
Rock & Ice to Mens Journal and National Geographic Adventure.
He lives in Bend, Oregon.
I started clIMBIng when I was thIrteen
in a climbing gym full of boys. In the beginning,
too intimidated to step in, I would mostly
watch as the boyswell, men reallyboul-
dered. eventually, however, I got used to the
guys and began participating. . . . In turn, the
guys got used to the tiny girl who was always
hanging around watching.

Discover the essence of the Rockies
through ED COOPERS lens.
Celebrate the remarkable Rocky Mountains
with this stunning photographic feast that
takes us from the Canadian border at Idaho
and Montana to the Mexican border at Big
Bend National Park. Author, photographer, and
legendary climbing bum ED COOPER brings
Americas most iconic mountain range to life,
passionately zeroing in on the heart of the
Rockies, including most of the better known
subranges, and capturing views of the highest
peaks in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado,
Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico.
In keeping with his sensibilities as a moun-
taineer and climber, Cooper provides the most
current and relevant geodetic data for every
featured peak, including newer, corrected
altitudes that reect more accurate measuring
by the National Geodetic Survey. Readers can
now easily look up each peak on topographic
maps or viewthemin stunning three-dimensional
display using tools such as Google Earth
thanks to Coopers impressive collection of
data found at the end of each chapter.
Unlike any other book on the Rocky Mountains,
Soul of the Rockies focuses exclusively on the
mountains themselves rather than dwelling on
related themes such as ora, fauna, mining,
logging, and history. It is quite simply a
distillation of the best views the Rockies have
to offer, revealing through this spectacular
work all the glory of Americas largest
mountain range.
Ed Cooper was a pioneer during the Golden
Age of North American climbing in the 1950s
and early 1960s. His daring accomplishments
in the American West and Canada have become
legendary. For many years he continued to pur-
sue the continents great peaks. In more recent
years, camera in hand, he has produced awe-
inspiring mountain photographs that are in
league with the works of Ansel Adams and
Bradford Washburn. Ed is the author of the ac-
claimed Soul of the Heights: 50 Years Going to
the Mountains (FalconGuides), and his photos
have graced the covers of Audubon, Arizona
Highways, Backpacker, National Geographic,
and Sierra. He and his wife, Debby, live in
Sonoma, California.

Introduction
Nature at Your door
Teyre out there every day, fashing through your yard on the wing or perch-
ing, inquisitive, in a tree above you while you putter in your garden or enjoy
a cool drink on your patio. Tey collect on the utility wires above your apart-
ment or suddenly congregate around puddles on your front walk.
Winter locks your yard in an icy stasis, but still the birds arrivegathering
to huddle in a shrub, taking refuge just inside a hole in your shed, or poking
through tree litter scattered on the snows frosty surface. One morning, as the
days grow longer before the cold relents, youre awakened by the clear glissando
of a northern cardinal, the frst herald of approaching spring.
Birds telegraph the change of seasons, they clear last years berries of of your
bushes and reduce the number of grubs in your lawn, and they brighten your
mornings with their song. Tey already share your backyard and your neighbor-
hood with you, but you havent formally invited themover for dinner.
Luckily, its never too late to do so.
Why do more than sixty-eight million people in America watch birds? Per-
haps its the birds seemingly infnite diversity in limitless combinationsthe
remarkable variety of sizes, colors, songs, and behavior patterns we can observe.
Once we look beyond the sooty pigeons at the bus station or the starlings soaring
in synchronized focks over congested highways, the diversity of this family of
the animal kingdom is staggering. In North America alone, we can count more
than 950 bird species that either breed in the United States (sans Hawaii) and
Canada, or put in regular appearances around the continents fringes as they drift
over fromfaraway shores.
Dedicated backyard birders in nearly every state and province can tell you
that over the course of a year, you might see more than seventy diferent species
in your own yardfromhawks, geese, and gulls passing overhead to many vari-
eties of sparrows, fnches, and other small birds at your feeders and in your shrubs
and trees. If youre fortunate enough to live on the edge of a pond or lake, in a
farming community, or near a desertor if you have a large property with many
treesyour backyard visitors may expand to number more than one hundred
diferent species.
BackyardBirds New pp.indd 11 11/9/10 11:03 AM
207 Uninvited Backyard Guests
If youre feeding more seed and suet to squirrels than to your birds, youre not
alonevirtually every backyard birder faces the squirrel dilemma.
Squirrels remarkable fexibility, their ability to hang upside down by their
back feet while feeding, and their amazing prowess in leaping from trees to
feedersand not getting hurt if they miss and hit the groundall contribute
to their success. All of these skills also prevent us from foiling them for long.
To compound the problem, squirrels can climb smooth objects like poles,
balance on a wire or other slim avenue, and keep their footing on slick surfaces.
If they were not such nuisances at our bird feeding stations, we might be forced
to admire and revere these talented animals.
Tats why many manufacturers have invested large amounts of time and
money in research and development, just to help backyard birders keep the squir-
rels out of their birds food.
Te result is a parade of products that can turn your squirrel probleminto a
source of endless amusement.
FEEdERs THAT WORk
Spend an afternoon watching how your squirrels gain access to your feeders.
Do they jump up froma spot below the feeder? Do they walk the edge of your
neighbors fence and hop over to a feeder nearby? Or do they climb up through
a shrub thats close to the feeder? Te more you know about the access path,
the more likely it is you can solve the problem, often without any outlay of
funds. Here are feeder options that will work if you are looking to foil your
neighborhood squirrels. Weve tried many of these solutions, and some of them
do indeed do the job.
Trick Feeders
Trick feeders come in all shapes and sizes and in all price ranges. A popular
option is a feeder with a spinning bottomthat sends the squirrel fying when he
applies his weight to the perch. Most birding specialty stores carry this feeder,
which has a built-in rechargeable battery. No outdoor cord is required, but
Birding Tip: Wood is no good
Dont use wooden bird feeders! Squirrels chew through these
in a matter of hours, emptying them of their seed. Instead,
choose feeders made of hard plastic and/or metal, durable
materials that resist squirrels industrious teeth.
BackyardBirds New pp.indd 207 11/9/10 11:08 AM
208 Backyard Birding
you will need to charge the battery
every so often. Once the squir-
rels learn that they cant get to the
food, they will back of.
Another option is a feeder
with spring-loaded perches. Tis
trick feeder (shown here) can hold
the weight of small birds. When
a squirrel puts its weight on the
perch, however, it gives way and the
squirrel slips to the ground. Squir-
rels lean quickly, so once theyve
determined the seed is out of reach,
they will lose interest.
Weight-activated feeders
A weight-activated feeder holds nearly ten pounds of seeds, but its perch bal-
ances delicately as if it were part of an old-fashioned scale. When more than
two small birds land on the perch, it rocks down and closes of the seed dis-
penser openings. Squirrels will try for days to fnd a way in, but the rugged
construction and sensitive perch mechanism keep them from accessing any of
the seed. Be sure to place this feeder a good distance from branches or other
feeders, so the squirrel cant keep its weight on another perch while trying to
get past this one.
A second option is a little mesh feeder, a perfect addition to a small garden,
which has a built-in spring that
responds to weight. Two or three
birds can use the perches and feast
on the seed inside, but squirrels
are too heavy. When they try to
climb on, the mesh lowers and
shuts of the feeders holes. Squir-
rels cant even climb on top and
reach down the feeder, as this will
close the feeder holes.

dIY: CREATE YOUR OWN BAFFLE
Create your own baffes and deterrents out of
materials you may have around the house:
Wrap the feeder pole with metal fashing, which prevents squir-
rels from gaining a foothold as they climb.
If your feeder hangs from a clothesline or other line across your
yard, thread the chain or line through a series of plastic tubes,
cans, or other cylinders from one end to the other. When the
squirrel walks across on the way to the feeder, the tubes will
spin, dumping the squirrel on the ground.
Make your feeder pole out of PVC pipe. Squirrels cant get solid
footing on PVC material.
squirrel-Blocking solutions
Defeating the wily squirrel has become a hobby of its own, a high-spirited
struggle between humans and nature. Te wide-ranging list of solutions
involves various kinds of nontoxic chemicals, odor agents, alternate seed com-
binations, and even the old-fashioned catch-and-releaseall of which provide
the fun of watching squirrel behavior as they experience one product or process
after another.
Manufacturers now ofer many products at outdoor recreation, farm and
feed, and garden stores, with an even more inspired selection online (search
squirrel deterrents). Most backyard birders try these products sequentially, see-
ing what works and using another solution to augment whatever success the frst
one ofers.
How efective are all of these products? As in all felds of endeavor, some
solutions may prove very efective in one region of the country or against a par-
ticular squirrel species, while others may have no discernable efect at all.
Red pepper is a natural chemical in chile peppers called capsaicin, which
gives peppers their spicy heat. Squirrels appear to hate seed or suet coated with
capsaicinat least until they get used to it. Treated seed and suet are generally
a little more expensive than food that does not contain the hot chemical. Birds
in South America eat so many chile peppers that some species are called bird
peppers. It stands to reason that the birds will not be put of by capsaicin-treated
food, although these products receive mixed reviews frombackyard birders.
Other possible deterrents include a cloth bag or sock flled with mothballs,

After my frst qualifying round in the 1963 British Ama-
teur Championship, I brashly told the astonished Scottish
reporter that the Old Course at St. Andrews was a goat
ranch, and if I played it a thousand times it would still be
a goat ranch! Tree days and seven rounds later, I realized
it was one of the greatest golf courses in the world.

In my experience, the decision to increase green speeds has
defnitely hurt the game of golf. Tis development has not only
caused many of the greens on the great golf courses to be nearly
unplayable, but has really hampered the ability of a number of
players to negotiate the new speed levels.
Pete Dye

While I have never met Pete Dye, I know him
well. He is 500 years old and has absorbed the
wisdom of the ages. He has a pointed hat and
a fowing robe embroidered with occult sym-
bols. When he speaks, he becomes extremely
animated, and gesticulates a lot with fashes of
blue static crackling from his long fngernails.

For this re-design I signifcantly raised the aes-
thetic value of the book by making full use of
the 2 color possibilities. I utilized transparencies,
but kept a limited font selection of Gill Sans
and Adobe Caslon along with using illustra-
tions that were all stylized, most appear as silos.
I also adapted and created a number of original
illustrations to suit the project. The book won
positive remarks from customer reviews on

These are typographic and production
specs I created for a math workbook.
designed by my manager at the time.
I made all the master pages, defned
all the paragraph and character style
sheets, provided detailed examples of
all the page grids and also provided
examples of all pagination possibilities.
Because of the nature of mathematic
typesettingthere were hundreds of
style sheets to catalogthese specs
were given to various Pearson edito-

workbook series was launched. The
300-page workbook went on to be
produced for various states.
I designed the chapter openers for the

The standard form of a linear equation is y = mx + b. When you solve
an equation for y, it is in slope-intercept form. Using this form can help
you graph an equation. It gives you a good deal of information.

Note:
Example of solving
an equation for y
3x -y = 7
-y = -3x + 7
y = 3x - 7
y = mx + b
The slope of the graph is 3.
The graph crosses the y axis at -7.
y = 3 x - 7

Negative slope When the slope is negative, the graph of the line

Outft Your Mind campaign
Client: Falcon Guides
Software used: InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2
For this campaign I shot all the models in-house and composited them into the
snow scene, adding 50 layers of subtle details to heighten the photo realism.
The ad campaign ran in Backpacker, SNET news and other trade magazines
plus was used as a lightbox at the Outdoor Retailer trade show.
Based on an initial concept and sketch by Erynn Szewczyk
(geneticallydesigned.com)
Graphic used in a promotional video (stills below) shot at the Outdoor Retailer
show that was based on the campaign. The center image is the lightbox version
of the ad. To the left are the consumer and trade publications it appeared in.

Ad campaigns for Falcon.com
Client: Falcon Guides Guilford, CT
Software used: InDesign CS2, Illustrator CS2, Photoshop CS2
For two seasons in a row I have created ad campaigns for Falcon.com that
have appeared in their catalogs and in the back of many of their books. Falcon
Guides is one of the leading outdoor recreation publishers in the country.
For the campaign on the left I turned the web site into a rock-like structure
in Photoshop. For the more recent campaign on the right I went with a more
stylized approach to draw in readers.

Additional ad campaigns and high visibility ads
Client: Globe Pequot Press, Guilford, CT
Software used: InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2
The ad above was a black and white ad I created that ran in the 2007
Country Music Awards program which was distributed at the televised
event. The ad promoted the coffee table book, Nashville Portraits. I de-
signed it in an understated manner to complement the book and appeal
to the target audience of country music fans looking for holiday gifts.
The poster on the right was a template I designed that could be modi-
fed for the Off the Beaten Path series and customized for each state. I
conducted photo research and then I conceived of the photo treatment
to complement the subject matter and draw in the book-buying con-
sumer. Off the Beaten Path series design by Georgiana Goodwin.

Software used: InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2, iMovie, iDVD
I created a DVD of media appearances of best-selling author Kris Carr.
The DVD package matched the style of her best-selling book, Crazy Sexy
Cancer Tips and highlighted her appearances on Oprah, The Today Show
and CBS Evening News. I also used custom graphics in the DVD itself to
further promote the brand.

Introduction
These days, there isnt much to be said for ying as
entertainment. Any unorthodox behavior will get you
a forcible detention and, should you decide to employ
those surplus hours in practicing your craft skills,
youll nd yourself severely limited in the materials
you can bring on board. Welcome to barfbag origami.
Using only the in-ight barfbag and this invaluable
manual, you can create any number of paper ying
machines. Dont worry about running out of raw
material, either your neighbors, impressed by your
skills, are certain to rush to get their own barfbags
converted into a bat, a gull or a plane.

Shaping Your Barfbag
Airlines have been slow to see the alternative
possibilities in the standard barfbag format, so you
will have to tailor your material to create the perfect
origami square or rectangle. You wont be able to
use scissors to cut the paper, so practice folding and
tearing cleanly along the folds. To ensure your paper
shape is even, fold it corner to corner as shown in
illustration one, then tear off the surplus, as in 2 & 3.
and eagerly handing over their own bags . . . or else ask-
ing to borrow the book. And, in no time, youll fnd that
youve created your own tranquil, highly unusual little
origami club en route to your destination. Aside from
clear, illustrated instructions, each creation features a
diffculty gauge so readers can see what theyre in for
before they start folding their masterpieces. The book
also includes a helpful resource section that explains
where one can acquire more barfbags.
Flying these days may be a nauseating
experience, but with Barfbag Origami in
hand, youll be coming back for more. Last but
not least, though, a word of warning (straight
from the book): Before use, please check to confrm
that barfbag is empty. Used ones are unsuitable for
folding.
Chris Marks grew up in the Northeast of England.
Throughout a varied career that has included adver-
tising, graphic design, paper engineering, teaching
English as a foreign language, and writing, he has
consistently been experimenting with folded paper
designs that fy. He has traveled extensively in South
America and Asia, and now lives with his family and

Fold the horizontal folded edge in the center in half, down
towards the bottom diagonal.
Tear your barfbag into a
square. Turn your paper plain
side up. Fold diagonally.
Fold the resulting triangle
in half again, then unfold,
maintaining the creases.
Repeat the process on the
left-hand side of your folded
shape.
Turn the bat over and fold
both layers in half diagonally.
Then fold the aps up past
the middle line so that a
triangle sticks out on the top.

An accomplished ying machine, the bat is also
strong and exible in ight. Make the corners crisp

I designed this high-visibility course catalog for Pearson to use in
California, their largest adoption market. Taking a visual cue from the stylized
green waves that were in place in some of the programs existing PowerPoint
materials, I expanded on the look and designed complementary artwork and
page layouts to give the program a cohesive look. I limited the color scheme to
add impact to the message.

After fourteen seasons as an NFL star, Everson Walls retired to his hometown of Dallas, Texas. He and former
Cowboys teammate Ron Springs worked together on a variety of charities, and their families became close.
But, as time passed, Ron could no longer conceal the ravaging effects of his diabetes. Before Walls knew it, his
friends simple medical procedures had become amputations and dialysis. Rons life was on the line.

In A Gift for Ron, Walls tells the moving story of how he witnessed the suffering of his former mentor and his
family and, on hearing that a potential kidney donor had fallen through, learned that he and Ron shared some-
thing truly precious: a blood type. Walls knew his only optionto donate a kidney to save his friends life.
People say you do something like this for family.
Well, we are family. I had to do it. I couldnt sit here
and do nothing. Im not a hero. This decision was
an easy one.EVERSoN WALLS

Marketing sell sheets for various books

I can quickly conceptualize and execute marketing materials in a wide
variety of styles to suit any brand. For the A Gift for Ron sell-sheet I chose
a classic, understated system that would not compete with the book,
which I also designed.
For How to Live in the Woods (right) I went with a more stylized
approach to complement the books cover and appeal to corporate
book buyers from Barnes & Noble and Borders.

I created a series of Lambda back-lit trade show displays for Falcon
Guides to use during the 2007 Outdoor World conference held in Salt
Lake City, Utah. On the left is one of the displays. I chose a bold, simple,
grid set-up for maximum impact at the crowded trade show. I used Fal-
cons branded Pantone 123 C and various photos from their books to
convey the brand. Above is Falcon author Kathleen Brown signing books
in front of the display.

Empire and its Discontents:
Regional Rebellions, Slave Revolts, and
Political Conspiracies in Brazil, 18001850
Gabe Paquette
Assistant Professor of History at The Johns Hopkins University
Professor Paquette will discuss the
rebellions, revolts, and political
conspiracies that nearly tore Brazil
apart after it gained independence in
1822particularly the Confederation
of the Equator (1824), the Mal Revolt
(1835), the Cabanagem (183536), and
the Praieira Revolt (184849). Among
the questions he will ask, and answer,
are: What did the rebels want? Why
did they fail? What were the long-term
consequences for Brazil, for South
America, and for the Atlantic World?
Professor Paquette graduated from
Wesleyan as a history major in 1999.
While fnishing his PhD at the University
of Cambridge, he returned to Wesleyan
as a visiting instructor in history and
a tutor in the CSS.

Trained as a linguistic anthropologist, Professor Millers research
focuses on cultures of contemporary Muslim reform in the Middle
East and especially in Yemen. His frst book, The Moral Resonance of
Arab Media: Audiocassette Poetry and Culture in Yemen, explores how
Yemenis have used traditional poetry and new media technologies to
envision a productive relationship between tribalism and progressive
Muslim reform. His current book focuses on the trajectory of Bin
Ladens leadership and al-Qaida as fgured through an archive of
more than 1,500 audiocassettes formerly deposited in his house in
Qandahar, Afghanistan.

eaching business software
applications presents a
unique challenge for educators.
To be successful, students must
learn a manipulative skill as well
as understand and retain new
information. As experienced
teachers know, the wrong in-
structional materials can make
the process virtually impossible.
Have you ever used a text-
book that enabled students to
produce hnished documents
in class but left them unable
to pass assessments or dem-
onstrate real learning? This is
usually the result of poorly de-
signed instruction that spoon
feeds instruction and does not
require students to practically
apply the information.

DDC Publishing introduced its
hrst computer applications text-
book in 1987 based on what
works in the classroom. For
twenty years, DDC has listened
to teachers and continued to re-
hne a crafted synthesis of cogni-
tive and visual learning process-
es to ensure student success.
Designed specihcally with the
needs of high school students
and teachers in mind, these
powerful instructional programs
for Microsoft Ofhce 2003 and
2007 help students of all skill
levels build conhdence and pro-
hciency in Word, Excel, Access,
PowerPoint and Outlook.
Keep the hew-te separated
Iremthe instructien
An important element of the
DDC approach is keeping how-
to procedures separated from
the instruction. Students focus
on creating the hnal outcome
described in a business scenario
and exercise directions and are
forced to think in order to hnd
the procedure to accomplish a
task.
P|enty eI exercises Ier a||

Repetition is essential to learn-
ing any skill. All DDC computer
applications texts feature multi-
ple levels of exercises with pro-
gressively greater rigor that en-
able the teacher to engage stu-
dents of a wide variety of learn-
ing abilities.

Editorial writing
Client: Bookbuilders of Boston

One of my differentiating strengths is
that I am not just a designer/project
manager. My academic background
is in English and journalism. I enjoy
writing and look for opportunities
to practice this skill. My background
enables me to see the big picture
on any project, small or large. I can
understand the challenges of an
editorial employee/department.
This is an interview I conducted
with MIT Media Lab Professor
Michael Hawley upon his publication
of the worlds largest book, Growing
Up Bhutan.
10
PAGES, Winter 2004
By Bret Kerr
In 2001, Hawley founded Friendly Planet, a nonprofit com-
pany dedicated to children's education in developing coun-
tries. Friendly Planet is now producing a series of photo
books about what it's like to grow up in some of the world's
most extraordinary cultures. Recently, the company pub-
lished its first book, entitled Growing Up Bhutan. This is
how the book is described on the Friendly Planet website:
At over 130 pounds and 5 x 7 feet, Guinness World
Records acknowledges Friendly Planet's Bhutan as
the world's largest published book. But it's less like a
book and more like an entire gallery show of enor-
mous prints, packaged in an immense yet browseable
volume. The subject is the remarkable kingdom of
Bhutanthe grandeur of its gorgeous scenery, the
wonderfully warmhearted people there, and the
serenity and specialness that make Bhutan so unique.
Copies of the books are being sold for $10,000 with prof-
its going to aid the Friendly Planet charities. The book is
being produced and bound locally by Acme Bookbinding of
Charlestown, MAthe oldest bookbinder in the world.
"The book is a masterpiece," says Paul Parisi, president of
Acme. "It's a little like having an incredible larger-than-life
art gallery in one volume. So crafting the binding to match
that level of beauty became a labor of love for us."
Dr. Hawley chatted with Pages recently while he was in
Tokyo on a promotional tour for Growing Up Bhutan.
D
r. Michael Hawley is currently Director of Special Projects and founder
of MITs GO Expeditions program. Prior to that, Hawley was one of the
heads of the MIT Media Lab for 10 years.
Interview with MIT Media Lab
Guru Michael Hawley
Producer of the Worlds
Largest Book
11
PAGES, Winter 2004
Pages: With all the forms of media at your disposal, how did you
settle on the traditional, albeit on a revolutionary large-
scale, form of the book?
Dr. Hawley: I love books, personally, and we always had in mind the
idea of creating a series of books that both helped to show
what it is like to grow up in one of the world's extraordi-
nary cultures, and helped to raise funds to support schools
and scholars in those places. Little books can't do both very
effectively. The big book, as fanciful and impractical-seem-
ing as it is, actually is both sensible and effective.
First, we can charge a lot for it, but it doesn't cost that much
to make, so it really can raise good money. Second, it cap-
tures real attentionthere's an undeniable "wow" when a
new person first encounters it; everyone smiles (the thing is
so absurdly big that it makes you feel like a two-year-old
again) and then enjoys browsing it more deeply.
And third, it's actually quite practical. There is hardly an art
gallery anywhere here in Tokyo (where I currently am) that
can display imagery that totals about 5 x 400 feet of surface
area. But the whole gallery of giant-sized images fits neatly
on one 5 x 7 easel. The cost of framing or mounting even
one 5 x 7 print might be $2500. But in our package, the
images average out to less than $100 each, a bargain, actu-
ally, although the whole thing adds up to an epic.
