1.1.2 F Exp Log

The document discusses exponential and logarithmic functions. Exponential functions involve a constant raised to a power, while logarithmic functions are the inverse of exponential functions. The key graphs described are y=ax, which is defined for all real numbers with range from 0 to infinity, and y=ln(x), with domain all positive real numbers and range all real numbers. Examples are given of sketching graphs of various exponential and logarithmic functions.

Exponential Functions

An exponential function involves a constant raised to a power.

y=a

a > 0, a 1

Logarithmic Functions
Let a be a positive real number different from 1. The logarithm of x with base a is defined by

y = log a x if and only if x = a

For every x>0 and every real number y

Natural Logarithmic Function

Definition: Let b a positive number. The natural logarithmic function, denoted by lnx, is defined as:

ln x = b if and only if e = x
