DETERMINATION OF THE ACCELERATION DUE TO GRAVITY USING A SWINGING PENDULUM OLUSEUN TEMIDAYO OLTEC11

Aim: To find the acceleration due to gravity from the periodic motion of a simple pendulum To understand the concept of acceleration in general and that due in gravity in specific Diagram of experiment:

Description of the method used: The apparatus was set up as shown in the diagram above. Using a metre rule, the length of the string was measured to be 0.2 Metres. The weight was given a little push and time taken for 10 oscillations was measured with a stop watch and divided by 10 to find the period (T).This step was repeated with the length of the thread increased to 0.4m, 0.6m, 0.8m, 1.0m and 1.2m and the results were tabulated. Using L and T, 4 L and T were calculated and added to the table. Then, 4 L and T were plotted against each other on a graph and the gradient g (acceleration due to gravity) found. Results Table: Length /Metres 0.200 0.400 0.600 0.800 1.000 1.200 Period(T10)/Seconds 9.20 12.40 15.40 17.70 19.70 21.40 T /Seconds 0.92 1.24 1.52 1.77 1.94 2.14 4 L/Metres 7.89 15.79 23.68 31.58 39.47 47.37 T/Seconds 0.84 1.54 2.31 3.13 3.76 4.60

Since G =4 L (m) /T (s), the acceleration due to gravity is 10.06m/s

Reason for variation of answer:

Accuracy of the materials (stopwatch and metre rule) used in experiment and the human reaction time String must be tight on clamp and mass so that zero friction will affect the string It is assumed that there is no air resistance and 100% of gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy, and vice versa
