Comparative Paragraph

A teenager's life today would be very different from a teenager like Holden in the 1950s due to changes in social norms and laws over time. Teenagers today would not go to plays for dates or discuss sex and drinking as openly as teenagers did in Holden's era due to today's social views seeing such topics as taboo or inappropriate for adolescents.

Comparative Paragraph

A teenager s life would be very different from the life of a teenager in Holden s time, because Holden lives in a time fifty years ago, and times have changed since 1950. A teenager or adolescent today would not go to a play with their date because teens think plays are boring nowadays, and would most definitely not argue to make a first date turn out bad. Two examples of when Holden was rude to his date were that Holden kept criticizing her and also said that Sally Hayes only wanted to go to the skating rink because she wanted to wear a really short skirt to look revealing. Another difference between adolescents today and adolescents of Holden s time is that nobody would just decide to hire a prostitute or have sex with people at school. For example the teens of Holden s time lose their virginity and openly talk about their sex lives with other people even though they are only about fourteen to seventeen. Teens from today are told and made clear that sex before marriage is bad. Also teenagers from today would never talk about having sex with that girl or that other girl. Teenagers wouldn t even mention having sex because the society of today has made the subject of sex taboo, and that it s wrong and disturbing. I think in Holden s time period the people were more open to subjects like sex and drinking. Now another difference is in the laws. For example Holden is allowed to walk into a bar and get drunk even though he s only sixteen or seventeen. For teens of today it would be impossible to get into a bar because laws permitting only people nineteen and over are strictly followed not to mention having to try to get past the bouncer at the door. Another law that is different is the laws against prostitution. If the laws of today were applied to Holden s time Maurice would definitely be arrested if Holden were smart enough to call the police after being sexually assaulted, and because Maurice offered a prostitute to a minor. These three things are things that are different between adolescent life today and adolescent life from Holden s day.
