This document provides information about vapor-liquid equilibrium for various alcohol mixtures and asks the student to calculate:
1) The bubble point and vapor/liquid compositions for a mixture at equilibrium.
2) The dew point and vapor/liquid compositions for the same mixture at equilibrium.
3) The temperature and compositions of both phases when 40% of the mixture is vaporized in a flash distillation.

Faculty : Faculty of Engineering & Science Unit Code : UEMK3213 Course : BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering Unit Title : Unit Operation Year : Year 2 Lecturer : Ms. Teoh Hui Chieh Tutorial 1 1. The vapour-pressure data are given below for the following alcohols: Vapour Pressure (mmHg) T (degC) Methanol Ethanol n-Propanol n-Butanol 50 415 220 88.9 33.7 60 629 351.5 148.9 59.2 65 767 438 190.1 77.7 70 929 542 240.6 99.6 75 1119 665 301.9 131.13 80 1339 812 376 165 85 1593 984 465 206.1 90 1884 1185 571 225.9 100 2598 1705 843 387.6
The following is the composition of a liquid alcohol mixture to be fed to a distillation tower at 101.32 kPa: methanol x A = 0.30, ethanol x B = 0.20, n-propanol x C = 0.15, n-butanol x D = 0.35. Calculate the following assuming that the mixture follows Raoults law: (a) Bubble point and composition of vapour in equilibrium. (b) Dew point and composition of liquid in equilibrium. (c) The temperature and composition of both phases when 40% of the feed is vaporised in a flash distillation.
2. A liquid containing 60 mol% toluene and 40 mol% benzene is continuously distilled in a single- equilibrium-stage unit at atmospheric pressure. What percent of benzene in the feed leaves in the vapour if 90% of the toluene entering in the feed leaves in the liquid? Assume a relative volatility of 2.3 and obtain the solution graphically.
3. An equimolar mixture of ethane, propane, n-butane and n-pentane is subjected to a flash vaporisation at 150F and 205 psia. What are the expected amounts and compositions of the liquid and vapour products? Is it possible to recover 70% of the ethane in the vapour by a single-stage flash at other conditions without losing more than 5% of nC4 to the vapour? Obtain K-values from Figure 2.8. Tip: In general, as the temperature is reduced, the relative volatility increases.
