Chemistry Project
Objective of project
In this project, we will learn test the presence of oxalate
ions in the guava fruit and how its amount varies during
different stages of ripening.
EXPERIMENT
AIM
To study the presence of oxalate ion content in
guava fruit at different stages of ripening.
REQUIRMENTS
100 ml of measuring flask, pestle and mortar, beaker,
titration flask, funnel, burette, weight box, filter paper,
dilute H2SO4, N\10 KMnO4 solution and guava fruits at
different stages of ripening.
THEORY
Oxalate ions are extracted from the fruit by boiling pulp
with dil. H2SO4. Then oxalate ions are estimated
volumetrically by the solution with standard KMnO4
solution.
PROCEDURE
1. Weigh 50.0 g of fresh guava and crush it to a fine
pulp using pestle-mortar.
OBSERVATIONS
Weight of guava fruit taken each time = 50.0 g
Volume of guava extract taken in each titration = 10.0 ml
Normality of KMnO4 solution = 1/10
Burette reading Concordant volume
Sr.no Guava extract of N/10KMnO4
Initial Final
from solution used
1. Fresh guava X ml
2. One day old guava X1ml
3. Two days old guava X2ml
4. Three days old guava X3ml
CALCULATIONS
1. for fresh guava
N1V1 = N2V2
(Guava extract) (KMnO4 solution)
