Sip Based Mobility Architecture For Next Generation Wireless
This document proposes a SIP-based mobility architecture for next generation wireless networks. It discusses challenges with seamless handover across heterogeneous networks using Mobile IP, including triangular routing issues. It suggests SIP mobility management as a solution but notes SIP can introduce delays for real-time applications. The proposed architecture aims to ensure minimal packet loss and variation in handover delay through an IP-layer soft handover scheme combined with SIP. An overview of SIP and its role in mobility support is also provided.

SIP BASED MOBILITY ARCHITECTURE FOR
NEXT GENERATION WIRELESS NETWORK

CReWMaN, University of Texas at Arlington Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of Texas at Arlington Introduction IP convergence has led to the co-existence of several IP based wireless access technologies (e.g., GPRS, CDMA 2000 Wireless LAN) Emergence of different access technologies + diversity in mobile devices = Difficulty in providing seamless service Problem is more complicated with multimedia applications [ Voip | Video Streaming ] Vertical hand-off: supporting services seamlessly across heterogeneous access networks, while migration from one network to another [location and network transparency] Mobile IP comes to play, but suffers from problem of triangular routing which is detrimental to real-time streaming traffic. ( where fast handoff, low latency and minimal packet loss are very important) Mobile IP route optimization: proposed to solve routing problem. Two major draw back. IP stack needs change to implement route optimization Home Agent can only initiate optimization which introduces additional delay. Session Initiation Protocol Mobility Management as a solution. SIP introduces unacceptable handoff delays for multimedia applications with stringent QoS requirements. We propose an architecture for IP-layer based soft handoff scheme with SIP Ensures minimal packet loss and handoff delay variation. Overview of SIP and Mobility support SIP is a control protocol that allows creation, modification and termination of session with one or more participants Used for both voice and video calls Supports point-to-point and multiparty sessions Independent of media transport SIP defines a set of messages, such as INVITE, REGISTER, REFER etc., to setup sessions between the user agents Sip architecture User Agent, registration servers, location server and SIP proxies user agent is a SIP endpoint that identifies services such as controlling session setup and media transfer, are identified by SIP URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers) registrar server :All user agents register their IP addresses with a SIP SIP proxies : These messages are routed through sip proxies that are deployed in the network
