Boxplot

The document describes how to create a boxplot in Tinkerplots using a dataset of 11 values ranging from 3 to 17. First, the data is entered into a CASES icon. TINKERPLOTS – BOXPLOT

1. DATA ENTRY

Open a new Tinkerplots document.


Drag a CASES icon to the worksheet.
Click on the ATTRIBUTE label and enter VALUE.
Type in the following values, pressing TAB to move to the next case.

2. ANALYSIS

Drag a PLOT icon to the worksheet and enlarge the plot by clicking and dragging one
of the corners.
Click and drag the VALUE label to the horizontal axis.
Click on and drag one point on the plot to the right until a linear scale appears on the
horizontal axis.

What is the median value of this data set ?


Click on the drawing tool at the bottom of the plotspace.
Draw a vertical line (about 1 cm long) above the median value.

What is the Quartile 1 value of this data set ?


Click on the drawing tool at the bottom of the plotspace.
Draw a vertical line (about 1 cm long) above the Quartile 1 value.

What is the Quartile 3 value of this data set ?


Click on the drawing tool at the bottom of the plotspace.
Draw a vertical line (about 1 cm long) above the Quartile 3 value.

What is the minimum value of this data set ?


Click on the drawing tool at the bottom of the plotspace.
Draw a vertical line (about 1 cm long) above the minimum value.

What is the maximum value of this data set ?


Click on the drawing tool at the bottom of the plotspace.
Draw a vertical line (about 1 cm long) above the maximum value.

Complete a box by drawing a line between the tops of the Q1 and Q3 markers, and
between the bottoms of the Q1 and Q3 markers.
Draw a whisker from the Q3 line to the maximum line, and draw a whisker from the
Q1 line to the minimum.

Click on the arrow next to HAT on the PLOT toolbar (HAT options). Scroll down to
select BOXPLOT, and watch it appear on the screen.
(Clearly quicker to operate, but this way shows clearly how the key markers of the
boxplot assist the process).
