Assignment Problem: Case Study-1 Swimming Problem

The document describes an assignment problem to select 4 swimmers for a relay race team from 5 eligible swimmers (Anand, Bhaskar, Chandru, Dorai, and Eswar) based on their times in 4 swimming styles. It provides the swimmers' times and converts it into a balanced assignment problem that can be solved using the Hungarian method. The optimal assignment found is: Anand for breaststroke, Bhaskar for freestyle, Chandru for backstroke, and Eswar for butterfly. Dorai is not selected for the race.

INTRODUCTION
• Selection of four swimmers for a relay team
• Five eligible swimmers- Anand, Bhaskar,
Chandru, Dorai and Eswar
• Four different swimming styles- Back stroke,
Breast stroke, Free style and Butterfly.
• Time taken by them to cover a distance of 100
meters in different swimming styles-

Solution
• The optimal assignment of swimming styles to
each swimmer is as follows:
1. Anand Breaststroke
2. Bhaskar Freestyle
3. Chandru Backstroke
4. DoraiShould not be in the race.
5. Eswar Butterfly

• Therefore, Dorai will not take part in the relay
