Jay Wright - 15 Great

Plays from the 4 out 1 in

Plays for your players!

• Spacing is offense and offense is spacing
• Like to teach motion, because you teach basketball
• Right Person, the right shot, at the right time.
• Move people, move the ball, then run the play (false motion) or you can simply call
“quick” and go directly into the play.
• Motion <play> = run false motion, then run the play.
• Butter <play> = run the play until their is 8 seconds left on the shot/game clock.
• Quick <play> = run the play immediately.
• We want to run sets that are distinct from our motion.

Wing
• Guard dribbles at the wing
• wing clears through to the opposite
corner.
• low post sets the wing screen for the point
guard.

On the screen:
• High forward and slot guard set a double
screen for the wing who just cleared out.

* If youʼve got a great point guard, set the

screen, closer to the corner.
* If youʼve got a great post shooter, set the
screen higher.

Pop
This is an isolation play for our 4 man
(forward).
• We run roll and pop

On the screen:
• strongside wing cuts across the baseline to
the opposite corner.
• weak side wing, blast cuts up to free throw
line extended.
• slot dribbles off the screen to space, while
the screening forward rolls to the junction.
• low forward, v cuts to the backside wing.
• Can either shoot or rip and drive
opposite.

Punch
This play is designed to get an easy post up
for the 5.

• 1 dribbles at the high ball screen, then

reverse pivots and dribbles towards the wing.
• On 1ʼs pivot:
• 5, who has been walking his check into
the key, spins and posts.
• 3 v-cuts to the wing, looking for the pass
and quick post entry.
• 4 sets a down screen for 2
• If 1 decides not to make the post
entry, 2 should coming open just in
time to be available on the other side.

Punch - cont.

• If 5 is being overplayed, denied or doubled

from the strong side, he can reverse seal and
get an entry pass from 2.

• If 2 does not make the entry pass to the

sealing 5, 4 sets the side screen.
• If 2 does not turn the corner and score
the layup, he drag dribbles to space.
• 4 rolls to the hoop.
• 1 fills the spot vacated by the screen and
roll.
• 5 fills the slot spot (since she has to be
diagonally opposite 4 in the motion).

* We are now in our motion spots.

Pin
Trying to get our big man right in the middle of
the lane.
• Wing face cuts (over the post), plants in the
middle of the key, then cuts baseline off the
Pin screen set by the low post.
• As soon as the wing clears the screen, the
post steps to the ball.

Pin Rip
This is an immediate (and automatic) plan for
the penetration pass.

On the post entry:

• Opposite post dives to the weak side of the
hoop.
• Guard in the slot cuts to the opposite
junction.
• Wings, slide above the free throw line
extended spots on their side

Scissors
Instead of running “rip,” we call scissor. This is
a different movement off the penetrating post
pass and needs to be called.

On the post entry:

• The wing screens for the guard in the slot,
who cuts off it to the wing.
• after the screen, the wing dives to the
hoop.
• The forward in the slot, down screens for the
weak side wing.

* All of our skip/seal options are still available

here.

Side line out-of-bounds

This is designed to simply get the ball in and
run offense. Unless something else is called,
this is what we run.
• 3 and 5 split
• 3 runs into the back court if necessary
and 5 dives to the hoop.
• 4 turns and screens for 1.
Give the 1 space to get open (but to the ball).
• 4 man goes opposite.
• Our last option is the 4 “Put it up to him”

Side line Out of bounds - cont.

Punch
Here we go right into our regular set play, from
the Sideline out of bounds alignment (we can
do this for all of our plays.

• 5 dives to the basket.

• 3 cuts off the flare screen set by 4.
• 4 then turns and sets a screen for 1, who
cuts to the ball.

• On the inbounds, 2 steps in to the strong

side wing spot.

* We are now in our motion/set play alignment.

Punch (or whichever regular set we choose to

run from our playbook)
• 1 dribbles at 4 to initiate “punch.”

Butter
A play designed to get a good scoring
opportunity with little time left on the clock.

• 3 steps up and 5 dives to the short corner

(“porch”).

• 4 steps up and sets a back screen for 3 to

cut to the basket, looking for the lob pass.
• If 1 canʼt make the pass, 4 steps to the
ball to receive the pass.

On this, we have a number of options:

1. 2 can simply step in to the 3pt line for the
return pass, while 3 cuts off the baseline
screen set by 5 for the corner 3pt option.
2. 2 can sprint and get a hand off from 4:
• If he gets the ball, he could dribble at 1ʼs
check looking to get one on the backdoor
cut (3 has cleared to the baseline corner
off 5ʼs screen).
• If 4 fakes the hand off, 1 continues
around looking for the lob as 5 cuts off
the baseline screen to the corner for the
3pt shot.
