The Order of Operations - To Avoid Confusion When Performing Operations, Mathematicians

1. The document discusses the order of operations, which is an agreed upon standard used in mathematics to avoid confusion when evaluating expressions with multiple operations. 2. The order of operations is to first perform operations inside grouping symbols such as parentheses, then multiply and divide from left to right, followed by adding and subtracting from left to right. 3. Several examples are provided to demonstrate simplifying expressions using the proper order of operations, with the answers given at the end.

Order of Operations

Standard: Algebra and Functions 1.2 – Use the order of operations.

The Order of Operations – To avoid confusion when performing operations, mathematicians

have agreed on an order of operations. Multiply and divide first. Then add and subtract.

Part 1
Multiply and divide first. Then add and subtract.

Simplify 4 + 15 ÷ 3 =

4 + 5 First divide

9 Then add

Part 2

1. Work inside grouping symbols

a. ( ) parenthesis
b. [ ] brackets
c. 10/5 fraction bar (or vinculum)
2. Multiply and divide in order from left to right
3. Add and subtract in order from left to right

Simplify 3[4 + (2 • 4)] ÷ 9

3[4 + (2 • 4)] ÷ 9

3[4 + 8] ÷ 9 Multiply within parenthesis

3[12] ÷ 9 Add within brackets

36 ÷ 9 Multiply

4 Divide

1. 6 – 6 ÷ 3 2. 3 (7 + 4) 3. 2 + 3 • 24

4. [2 + (6 • 8)] – 1 5. 6. 2[8 + (5 – 3)] – 8

7. 4 ÷ 4 • 4 + 4 – 4 8. 2 • 2 + 0 • 4

9. Evaluate 4y – 15, for y = 9

10. 4(t + 3) + 1, for t = 8

Order of Operations (Part 2)

Try these!

1. 10 – 1 • 7 2. 5 + 6 • 4 ÷ 3 – 1 3. 2[(13 – 4) ÷ 3]

4. 6 • 2 + 4 5. (21 + 3) ÷ 4 ÷ 2 6.

7. If x = 4 and y = 3, then xy – 2x =

a. 4
b. 6
c. 19
d. 40

8. If n = 2 and x = , then n (4 – x) =
a. 1
b. 3
c. 7
d. 10

9. If h = 3 and k = 4, then

c. 8
d. 10
