This project aims to design an effective biogas digester system for a horse farm to dispose of horse waste and produce energy. The system will be designed and projected over 10 weeks to determine the digester size, expected gas flow, engine size and power output, gas usage options, control systems needed, and overall costs. The goal is for the biogas plant to produce enough electrical and heat power to meet the farm's needs, with potential excess power sold to the electrical grid.

Backround:

The project born to meet both the needs of dispose of the horse waste and produce energy for the
horse farm.

Existing problems are:

-Designing and projecting an effective digester tank for the farm’s specific case.

-Foresee the extent of gas flow and choose the best alternative to maximize the outcomes in terms
of money. Different alternatives could be:
-Introduce a storage tank and run the engine only when needed
-Run the engine 24/7

-Make the engine running smoothly without any gas cleaning system between it and the digester

-Estimate a first, overall cost of the plant

Aim:
The biogas plant should produce a certain amount of electrical and heat power that can be used by
the farm itself, meeting its power demand.
If this won’t be possible, part of the electrical power will be sold to the electrical grid.

Time Limitations:
The project will cover a period of 10 weeks, from the 28th of March to the 5th of June, with the
following roadmap:
Week 1 – Overall planning and environmental information gathering
Week 2,3 – Digester’s dimensioning and design, based on the available information (no
experimental confirmations). Expected gas flow assessment.
Week 4 – Engine dimensioning. Expected gas consumption and power outcomes.
Week 5 – Analysis of the different alternatives about gas usage modalities.
Week 6 – Overview of the control systems needed (analyzing what need to be controlled and how it
need to be controlled)
Week 7 – Overall cost overview
Week 8 – Project review
Week 9, 10 – Scientific report writing
