Lesson Plan

Grade- 3
Grade Level Expectation- Students can select a topic and use specific words to “paint a
picture”
Lesson Inform students that today they will be learning about writing with description.
Initiation
-Ask students what they already know about writing short stories. (Students have
already learned about beginning, middle, and end of stories, as well as plot, characters,
and setting.)

Lesson 1) Start the lesson by playing podcast to the students. This podcast is a recording or
Development the story “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolen. Instruct the students to close their eyes,
and try to picture what they hear.
2) Tell the students that you are going to play a video of a child known as Adora
Svitak, who is teaching descriptive writing to a class. Let students know that
Adora Svitak is a child just like them, who is very talented when it comes to
creative writing, as she is already a published author.
3) After watching the video of Adora, initiate the smartboard lesson on descriptive
writing with the class. Call up different students to underline descriptive words
and revise sentences on the smartboard. Make sure every student gets a chance
to interact with the smartboard.
4) Next, play the slide show retrieved from Slideshare on similes and metaphors.
This slide show was created by Dianne St. Clair.
5) Lastly, take the students through the Google Earth Trip. At each stop, read the
location and description. Students will look at the picture and write a few
sentences to describe it using their creativity and imagination.
Closure Review the reasons why we use descriptive writing in our stories. (To enable readers to
picture the story in their minds, to answer any questions the reader may have about the
story.)

Pass out the take home writing prompt. Tell students that they will need to use what
they learned in class today to complete the writing prompt for homework. Go over the
prompt with the class and answer any questions.
Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to use their knowledge of descriptive writing
using the five senses to write a short story that creates a clear picture for the reader.
