SCAFFOLD
Purpose: To tell someone how to make or do something
Goal / Aim
A statement about what we are trying to make or do.
Materials / Equipment
You will need :
Include amounts of each material e.g. 4, half a cup, 2 metres.
Steps
Instructions are in the form of direct commands and must be
clear and easy to understand.
List the steps to be followed in the order in which they are to be
performed.
Usually the steps are numbered.
Put each step on a new line.
Language Features
Put the text in the present tense.
Use action verbs at the beginning of each instruction e.g. cut, mix.
Use words or phrases which tell us how, where, when with whom.
Diagrams and drawings may be used to aid understanding.

Purpose: Procedural text is used to tell someone how to make or do
something.
WRITING FEATURES
The text begins
GOAL
with a statement
about what is to
be achieved.
Information is
STEPS
given about
materials to be
used. The
required amounts
are also stated,
often as the first
step.
Action verbs are
used.
Instructions are
given in the form
of direct
commands and
must be clear and
easy to
understand.
Each step
explains what the
reader needs or
what he or she
should do next.
