1. If f ( x )=x 4 + ax ³+bx ²+12 x −16 where a and b are constant. If ( x−4) is a factor of f (x)
and ( x−3 ) is a factor of f ' ( x ) , show that a=−4 and find the value of b .

with t=ln 3.

6. The graph of y=ax ³+bx ²+cx +d passes through the point (0,5),(2,9) and has stationary
point at x=1 and x=−1. Find the value of a , b , c and d .

7. The weights, to the nearest kg, of 180 male members of circus are summarized in the table
below.
(a) Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the weight of the male members of the
circus.
(b) Plot the cumulative frequency graph for the grouped data, and estimate the median
weight of the male members of the circus.
(c) Determine the probability that the male member of the circus chosen at the random has
the weight exceeding 86kg.

8. A survey on a highway found that 110 from 500 motorists do not obey traffic rules.
(a) Obtain a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of motorists that do not obey the
traffic rules.
(b) determine the smallest sample size that is required in order that the estimation error is not
more than 0.04 at a 90% confidence level.
