This document contains 7 questions related to fluid mechanics. Question 1 asks about velocity gradients and shear stress in fluid flow over a plate. Question 2 asks about mercury levels in a U-tube manometer. Question 3 asks about force on a gate valve in a pipe carrying oil. Question 4 asks about the metacentric height of a floating hollow cone. Question 5 asks about whether a given flow is rotational or irrotational. Question 6 asks about flow direction and energy loss in a pipe where diameter and pressure changes. Question 7 asks about force magnitude and direction to hold a duct in a bend where area changes.

CE-001D FLUID MECHANICS

Assignment No. 1
[email protected]

Q1: A liquid of viscosity 10 Poise flows over a plate, the velocity profile is a parabola with
vertex 0.25 m from the plate, where velocity is 1.25 m/s. Find velocity gradient at the plate
and at 0.25 m from the plate. Also, calculate shear stress at these levels.

Q2: The level of mercury in a U-tube manometer of diameter 10 mm is 150 mm. If 15 cm3 of
water is poured into one of the two limbs of the manometer, find difference of levels of
mercury in the manometer.

Q3: A gate valve provided in a pipe of diameter 4 m, carries oil of specific gravity 0.87. The
pressure at the centre of pipe is 200 kPa. Find the force exerted by oil on the gate valve and
its location.

Q4: A hollow cone of diameter 2 m, height 4m and weight 3.8 tonnes is floating in sea
(Specific gravity = 1.02) in the vertical position, with vertex downward. Find metacentric
height of the cone.

Q5: If stream function, ψ = (x3 – 3xy2), indicate whether the flow is rotational or irrotational.
If flow is irrotational, determine the velocity potential.

Q6: Oil of relative density 0.80 flows through a vertical pipe which changes in its diameter
from 150 mm at section 1 to 300 mm at section 2, section B being 5 m higher than section 1.
If pressures at sections 1 and 2 are 210 kN/m2 and 150 kN/m2, respectively, determine
direction of flow and energy loss when the pipe carries a discharge of 0.15 m3/s. Neglect
minor losses.

Q7: In a 60° horizontal bend, a rectangular air-duct of cross-sectional area 1 m2 is gradually

reduced to 0.5 m2 area. Find the magnitude and direction of the force required to hold the
duct in position, if velocity of flow at 1 m2 section is 10 m/s and pressure is 0.03 N/mm2.
Take specific weight of air = 11.6 N/m3.
