RFLP

RFLP analysis measures variations in lengths of DNA fragments containing short repeated sequences called VNTRs. DNA from samples is amplified, cut with restriction enzymes, and fragments are sorted by length using gel electrophoresis. If samples have VNTRs of different lengths, they cannot be from the same person, but if lengths match, they could be from the same person or two people with identical VNTR lengths. Comparing many VNTRs reduces the chance of coincidental matches to nearly zero. RFLP is time-consuming, taking weeks to complete, and has been replaced by faster techniques.
