Definition of HPN

Hypertension is defined as a persistently elevated blood pressure above normal levels. It is diagnosed when high blood pressure readings are found on two separate occasions. Prehypertension refers to systolic readings of 120-130 mmHg or diastolic readings of 80-89 mmHg, while hypertension is systolic above 140 mmHg or diastolic above 90 mmHg. Factors that can contribute to hypertension include thickening of arterial walls, lifestyle factors like smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption and stress. Medical management aims to prevent complications by achieving and maintaining blood pressure under 140/90 mmHg. Nursing management involves frequent blood pressure monitoring and assessment of medication effectiveness. Common signs and symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nosebleeds

HYPERTENSION

A blood pressure that is persistently above normal. hypertension cannot be diagnosed unless an
elevated blood pressure is found when measured twice at different times.

*Pre hypertension - individuals with diastolic blood pressure of 80 to 89 mm/hg or systolic blood
pressure of 120-130 mm/hg
*Hypertension - diastolic of 90 mm/hg or higher and systolic of higher than 140 mm/hg

FACTORS ASSOCIATED HYPERTENSION

Thickening of the arterial walls, which reduces the size of the arterial lumen, and inelasticity of
the arteries as well as lifestyle factors as cigarette smoking, obesity, heavy alcohol consumption,
lack of physical exercise, high blood cholesterol level, and continued exposure to stress.

FACTORS AFFECTING BLOOD PRESSURE

1. age 5. gender
2.exercise 6. medication
3. stress 7. obesity
4. race 8. diet

CLASSIFICATION OF BLOOD PRESSURE

category systolic BP mm/hg diastolic BP mm/hg

NORMAL <120 AND <80
PREHYPERTENSION 120-139 OR 80-89
HYPERTENSION 140-159 OR 90-99
STAGE 1
HYPERTENSION >160 OR >100
STAGE 2

MEDICAL MANAGEMENT

The goal of hypertension treatment is to prevent complications and death by achieving and
maintaining the arterial blood pressure at 140/90 mm/hg or lower
NURSING MANAGEMENT

when hypertension is initially detected, nursing assessment involves carefully monitoring the blood
pressure at frequent intervals and then after diagnosis, at routinely scheduled intervals, the AMERICAN
HEART ASSOCIATION has defined the standards for blood pressure measurement, including conditions
required before measurements are made, equipment specification, and techniques for measuring blood
pressure to obtain accurate and reliable readings. when the patient begins an antihypertensive treatment
regimen. blood pressure assessments are needed to determine the effectiveness of medication therapy and
to detect any changes in blood pressure that indicate the need for a change in the treatment plan.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HYPERTENSION

These are the following sign and symptoms of patient with hypertension

Blood pressure above 130/90

pain/sensation in the nape
