Target Audience?
After creating a poll, asking general questions about the sort of people that would
read my magazine and what they would like from a magazine, I received the
following information as the highest scoring answers. These will therefore be the
outline of my “target audience”.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
16-25 year olds (male and female equally) Also read fashion magazines
This is Beth who’s 18 years old and lives in Central London in the midst of
all the nightlife. She is a typical representation of the target audience I am
aiming my magazine at and therefore by looking into her interests, this
can help me understand which features to include, to attract the audience
in the most effective way possible.
Beth is a student, also working part time in fashion retail. From this, she
has made lots of friends similar to her in both personality and
appearance. She has been to many festivals over the years including
reading, v and sonisphere due to her interest in rock, indie and alternative
music. As well as festivals, she frequently goes to live gigs of an evening
with her friends, seeing both small artists and more widely known acts.
After being hugely influenced by the “underground” music scene
surrounding her in London, her favourite music artists include Florence
and the Machine, The Kings of Leon and The Script. All of these stem
from the rock genre, having an edgy ambience and creating an incredible
atmosphere when performing live. After spending time at gigs, Beth would
typically progress onto a nightclub before heading home in the early
hours of the morning.
16-25 year olds (male and female) – Use unisex colours throughout the layout, as well as a range
of photographs and models in order to appeal to the large range of people included within the audience.
Interested in indie music – Give articles on bands which perform indie music. The photographs of
the bands would also be of an artistic nature to reflect the style of music.
Prefer a “monthly released” magazine – Make sure all features of the magazine are interesting
and will gain the readers attention for a while, perhaps giving a free gift in order to keep the magazine
constantly within the mind of the audience despite the long time periods between issues.
Like to spend between £2.00 and £3.99 on a magazine – Keep the pricing of the magazine
low due to the target audience mostly being students or those within in a part time job who do not have much
money to spend of “luxuries” such as my magazine.
Mainly interested by the imagery on cover – I need to make the images interesting and stand
out from other magazine covers in order to gain the audience’s attention quickly. This could be done by using
unique models or styles of clothing/makeup and lighting.
Also read fashion magazines – From this I could include small fashion articles within the magazine
yet still keep the focus on music, or more subtly just use modern styling without the photographs, keeping up
to trend with fashion and appealing to the audience.
Main Ideas:
After taking the target audience into consideration, and brainstorming many ideas
about my magazine, these are the ones that stand out the most.
