Universal Serial Bus

This document provides an overview of Universal Serial Bus (USB) drives, including how USB works, its types and specifications, advantages and disadvantages, and applications. USB allows communication between devices and a host controller, usually a PC, and comes in several versions with increasing bandwidth capabilities. It has a host/slave connection using two wires for data transmission. USB drives are useful for transporting and storing data compactly and with low power usage, but are not suited for high-bandwidth devices and data can be lost if drives are misplaced.

Introduction to USB
• USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a specification to
establish communication between devices and
a host controller (usually personal computers).
• Full speed signaling 12 Mbps
• Low Speed signaling 1.5 Mbps
• Intended devices are keyboards, mouse,
joysticks, speakers; other I/O devices
How does USB works
• USB is PC-centric
• It has "host/slave" connection
• two wires handle data transmission
• USB transfers data in packets
• Pc transforms data in individual bits
• When ever usb is entered to a computer – pc
sends an unique address so when ever data is
sent or received the task is done through that
address.
USB TYPES
• USB 1.0
– low-bandwidth
– 183 KB/s
• USB 1.1
– full-bandwidth
– 1.43 MB/s
• USB 2.0
– hi-bandwidth
– 57 MB/s
• USB 3.0
– Super Speed
– 572 MB/s
CONNECTOR TYPE
• USB- A connector

• USB -B connector

• The A connector is rectangular and the B connector has a

more rounded type mechanical structure.
• There are also mini A, mini B, and mini AB connectors
which are smaller special versions of the A and B
connectors.
USB CABLE
• A USB cable has two pairs of wires for power
and a twisted pair of wires to carry the data.
• On the power wires, the computer supply
power of 5 volts.
PROS AND CONS

PROS:
• transporting data from place to place
• store data densely
• use little power
• No need of driver software
• Easy to retain their memory
CONS:
• Do not include a write-protect mechanism
• Costly
• Portable Thumb drive so easily misplaced ,
left behind, or otherwise lost
• not suited for high-bandwidth peripherals
ITS APPLICATION
• Maximum data transfer
• Used for power purpose
• Used for booting purpose
• USB data traveler is used as a RAM
• Connecting purpose
