Oogenesis VS Spermatogenesis

Oogenesis and spermatogenesis both involve meiosis to produce haploid gametes, but differ in key ways. Oogenesis produces one egg monthly over many years in females, with meiosis II not completing until fertilization. In contrast, spermatogenesis produces many sperm weekly over a male's lifetime, with meiosis completing before fertilization such that each produces four sperm.

Oogenesis Spermatogenesis

Involve meiosis
Produce 4 haploid daughter cells
All potential gametes produced before Start at Puberty and end at
birth and process end at Menopause death

Meiotic divisions unequal leading to the Meiotic divisions are equal

formation of polar bodies (eventually leading to 4 Spermatozoa
destroyed) from original Spermatogenic

Puberty releases the "arrested state" of Meiosis II completed before

primary oocytes leading to Ovulation the sperm leads to
fertilization

Meiosis II does not occur until Each "daughter cell"

fertilization of the secondary oocyte by develops into a sperm
mature sperm

Ovulation and Reproduction naturally end Time to complete = 7 weeks

during Menopause

Time to complete = 13-50 years Many sperm produced

One ovum (oocyte) matures monthly Occur in the seminiferous

Occur in ovaries Sertoli cells provide

nutrients
Follicles in the ovaries contain primary
