Debate #1 Gov..

The document discusses the topic of whether welfare creates more problems than it solves. It presents the government side of the argument that welfare reduces motivation to work, can make people lazier and lose dignity, and causes economic and social problems for states. Specifically, it argues that welfare may reduce incentives to find jobs, increase taxes and state costs/debts, and reinforce racial divides and feelings of unfairness among some groups. The document concludes that the problems caused by welfare outweigh its contributions.

Government Case

Intro: The things that advance your welfare are the things that make your life go better, or make
things better for you, or advance your well-being, or serve your best interests, or make you better
off in the most fundamental sense. The welfare system in the United States began in the 1930s, during
the Great Depression. The government was concerned with the growing public uprising against
Capitalism so it established the system to assist families with little or no income. After the Great Society
legislation of the 1960s, for the first time a person who was not elderly or disabled could receive a living
from the American government.

Resolution: Being in the Government side, we agree with the resolution that “welfare creates
more problems than it solves”

Define:
Welfare--

Value: Equality—
Honesty---

Arguments:
1. Welfare would change people’s behaviors.
A. It would reduce the motivation of people’s desire of working. People who qualified
for welfare are mostly poor. So they suppose to work harder than the other people in
order to support their family. However, in some cases, people would rather stay at
home and do nothing rather than try to find a job because they would like to rely on
the welfare benefit they can receive right now rather than go work, and pay taxes for
the government.
B. This would directly make low-income people become more and lazier, and lose their
dignity.
C. Some younger parents are not going to get married just for more money for the child
care.

2. Welfare causes the economic problems for the states.

A. Increasing the taxes.
B. Increases the costs and debts of the state.

3. Welfare causes the social problems.

A. It reinforces a racial divide
B. Feeling of unfair among middle-class people.

Conclusion: Welfare creates many problems to the government and the society. Comparing with
what it contributes, the visualized and unseen problems it would cause are more challenged.
