ABSTRACT

This document provides an abstract for a project that aims to design and implement a supervisory controller for domestic windmills. The project seeks to utilize wind energy in homes and private buildings to generate electricity at a low investment cost. The supervisory controller regulates the varying output voltage of a horizontal axis wind turbine's alternator to charge a 12V battery. It uses a voltage sensing circuit along with boost and buck chopper circuits to regulate the voltage for battery charging. An inverter can also be used to convert the DC battery voltage to 230V AC power for household use.

ABSTRACT

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION SUPERVISORY CONTROLLER

FOR

DOMESTIC WINDMILL

The main problem that India faces today is power failures. India depends
mainly on the thermal power plants which uses non-renewable resources to
produce electric power. Moreover the power production using renewable
resources like wind, water, tidal etc. accounts only a meager percent in total
power production. Wind is a major resource for power generation. Though lot
of large wind turbines are installed in India, their cost of installation is very
high. Still the power needs is not met by such wind turbines.

Our project “Design and Implementation Supervisory Controller for

Domestic Windmill” throws light on the idea of utilizing wind energy in houses
and private buildings to generate electricity with low investment cost. The wind
mill that we use is a horizontal axis type. It consists of a shaft, hub, blades,
alternator and pulley arrangement. The output of the alternator is a varying
voltage that depends on the velocity of the wind striking the blades. The
regulation of the voltage to charge the 12V battery is done using a supervisory
controller consisting of Microcontrollers. The first step is to sense the output
voltage of the alternator using a voltage sensing circuit. If the voltage sensed is
less than 15V the voltage is fed to a Boost Chopper and if the voltage is above
15V, it is fed to a Buck Chopper. The output regulated voltage is fed to a
charger circuit to charge a battery.

An Inverter may be connected to the battery to invert and step up the DC

voltage to 230VAC that can be utilized for household purpose.
