Evaluation Question 4
Evaluation Question 4
Throughout this project technology has been key. Without it, I would not have been able to
create this project; especially not one so diverse in media types. From the internet, to a
Dictaphone to a simple memory card reader, we have used such a range of technology to
compile this A2 Media Project.
Research
In the research stages of our project, the internet was our key tool. We used multimedia sites
such as YouTube and Apple trailers to watch existing horror trailers and evaluate its
effectiveness. This was also helpful for us to establish in our own minds exactly what a
‘teaser’ trailer is and how it should be constructed. We used these websites to watch trailers
for movies such as ‘One Missed Call’, ‘The Grudge’ and ‘The Strangers’. This was then the
basis to our project research and we could move onto looking at other formats.
Google has been a constant tool for me during this project. I have used the search engine to
find my research, answers to any questions, resources, tutorials and images of existing
magazines and posters. For my personal poster and magazine cover, I also used the internet
for a lot of my research into previous images and the construction of current film magazines
such as Empire and Total Film.
Blogger has also been a key tool for this project as I have been documenting and recording
all my research, progress and final outcomes using this software. We have also used it as a
form of contact and to post ideas and suggest alterations. Blogger is a really useful tool for
a group project like this as we have all been able to add extra information and research, edit
blog posts and upload interesting videos and websites for each other to use. In some area’s
I have combined these together to post YouTube videos to Blogger and used links to other
useful information and sites.
The iTunes Store was another key media technology that we used. When researching
possible music ideas, we were able to browse though its vast database and find any type of
music we wanted. This lead us to the first piece of music we added to the trailer, which then
got removed – but the range of eerie music and horror movie scores enables us to really
narrow down our search so we knew what we wanted.
Construction
During filming we used another type of technology – a hand held digital video camera to
capture all our scenes and audio. It took us a while to get used to it, but it came simpler and
we used it for almost the entirety of our filming, except for the ending. We wanted a realistic,
digitalised picture on the screen, to replicate what the character was seeing, so we filmed
the ending of our trailer using the camera from an iPod Touch. This was then uploaded onto
our Mac accounts in much the same way as the footage from the other camera and stored
on the external hard-drive that we used for the duration of this project.
iMovie was the program we used to edit our footage. We were all new to it at first so it took
us a while to get used to its layout and functions, but eventually we were able to piece
together our trailer. This program worked well because we could attach our sound seamlessly
and edit it right down to 0.1 of a second to get a precise and well edited final piece.
For my poster and magazine construction, I used Photoshop expert and InDesign to edit my
images and text and then construct the final texts. Again this software took me a fair while to
get used to it and learn its capabilities and how to create the vision I had for my ancillary
texts. Because both of these systems are used to make professional products, I think my
final texts look a lot more effective and professional than if they were created on a lesser
program.
The website flikr has also been useful to share photos and make them public so that anyone
can see or comment on them.

Prezi is a website that I found where you can create presentation materials and include links,
videos and text etc. I used this to answer the second question and I think it adds another fold
of new technology to my project. Hosting websites are becoming all the more popular and I
have used two more Slide Share and Scribd to share my PowerPoint and Word documents
on my blog. These were all useful tools which have helped me to stretch my coursework to
more multimedia.
For our feedback, YouTube again was an essential tool enabling people to watch our trailer
and comment of fill out a questionnaire. YouTube is a great way to get feedback on your
work and express your talent etc and with millions of users each day you are likely to
eventually find the right person to comment on your work. Also, Facebook and other social
networking sites are a great medium for sharing files, links and photos and was great
opportunity to get our trailer seen by alot of people – mostly from our target audience aswell.
All of these technologies and media forms have allowed me to create the media project I
needed. I think that the use of such a wide range of technologies suit this project and shows
there are always new programs enhancing the world of media – and as a media student, this
is very important to me.
