Marine pollution is caused by untreated waste from ships and accidents at sea, contaminating water. Marine engineering plays an important role in preventing pollution by following regulations from the International Maritime Organization. Systems are used on ships to treat waste, including oily water separators, sewage treatment, and incinerators to burn solid waste and oil. These systems help ensure waste is safely discharged or stored for disposal on land to protect marine life and air quality.

As Concerned with Maritime Industry, Marine pollution is caused by
disposal of untreated or insufficiently treated waste’s from ship
And sometimes Accidents leading to Contamination of Sea-Water. Off Shore Drilling (2.12%) Large Oil Spills (5.24%) Natural Seeps (8.78%) Up in the Smokes (13.03%) Routine Maintainance (19.24%) Down the Drain (51.24%) Marine Engineering is playing a important role in prevention and Control of Marine Pollution. Keeping in Mind the Regulations and Laws as prescribed by International Maritime Organization (IMO) Namely MARPOL .Many systems have been Developed and are being put in use on Board ships to overcome the problem persisting. Care is Being taken And precision is maintained in discharging Liquid Waste’s.
Following systems are being used on ships for treating the waste On ships and effectively Discharging them :
•Oily Water Separator
•Oil Content Monitoring System before Discharge •Sewage Treatment Systems •Waste oil or Sludge Incinerator Sewage Treatment •Untreated sewage absorbs oxygen there by threatening the Marine Organisms •Pungent Smell associated with it due to Hydrogen Sulphide Can cause harm. •Bacteria known as coliforms can cause various diseases
Oily Bilge Water Treatment
•Large quantities of oil form a thin film on water which cuts offs Oxygen supply to marine organisms resulting in death.
Exhaust Treatment Using incinerator
•Exhaust gases after burning of waste fuel consists of various Effluents and suspended chemical substances that causes air Pollution. Separation of Oily Water is Based on the principle of Low Density of oil due to which It comes to the surface when Mixed with water. Thus the Water obtained is discharged Safely. And oil is collected in a Separate tank. Solid Garbage wastes and waste oil are burnt in Incinerator and the Gases produced are brought upto optimum temperature levels and are made free from suspended particles which causes air pollution. But, this concept has gone quite old. Nowadays, garbage is packed in Bags and discharged whenever ship reaches the port and the waste Oil is used in boilers to save fuel. The Sewage treatment system make the sewage inert for disposal Into the sea. The liquid fraction is chemically treated which can be Used again. And Solids are chemically inerted by caustic addition And sent to a holding tank. And finally discharged overboard. As concerned with Maritime Industry, Vessels will continue to provide Efficient transport solutions for cargo and passenger movement while taking Care of the environment.
