Lab Report (5) : Title: Tasks

This lab report summarizes an experiment applying resin with and without softener to fabrics. The tasks were to learn resin application and the effect of softeners, and test properties after treatment. Fabrics were padded with resin or resin+softener, dried, and cured. Testing found shrinkage was lower and tear strength higher for fabrics treated with softener. Appearance deteriorated less after repeated washing for softener-treated fabrics. The conclusion was that softener improved properties by reducing strength loss and shrinkage when combined with resin treatment.

Title: APPLICATION OF RESIN WITH AND WITOUT SOFTNER

Tasks

 To learn application of resin.

 To learn effect of softeners.
 To find properties of after treated fabric such as:
 Appearance after repeated laundering
 Tear strength
 Shrinkage %age

Route

Pad è Dry è Cure

Materials and equipments

 Weighing balance
 Beakers
 Stirrers
 Graduated cylinder
 Padder
 Dryer

Chemicals used

 Fixapert ECO (DMDHEU based resin)

 MgCl2
 Nonionic softener

Recipe

 Resin = 100 g/L

 MgCl2 (catalyst) = 20 g/L
 Softener = 40 g/L
Procedure

1. Required chemicals were weighed.

2. All chemicals were diluted separately in beakers.
3. Chemicals were mixed and beaker was filled up to 1 liter.
4. Two solutions, one with softener and other without softener were prepared.
5. Knitted and woven fabrics were padded separately.
6. Fabrics were dried at 120oC for 90 sec.
7. Fabrics were cured at 170oC for 90 sec.

Conclusion

 After application of resin tear strength was reduced.

 Woven fabric with wrinkle recovery finish along with softener have higher tear strength
than treated without softner.
 Fabrics treated with wrinkle recovery finish along with softner have low shrinkage %age.
 Appearance after repeated laundering reduced on multiwashes.
