Title: The Proposal

By Muriel Palanca

Synopsis: A guy and a girl are preparing for a romantic anniversary dinner. The guy is working
up the courage to propose and the girl is remembering their relationship up until now. There is a
lot of love in this relationship, but will there be a happy ending? This is a cheesy, dramatic,
romantic short.

Budget/ items: Candles, tablecloth, nice-ish silverware and china. Someone willing to lend their
living room and kitchen for a few hours. Some willing extras for the spin the bottle scene. Some
children- a boy and girl.

When and where: When is as soon as I can. Where is a decent house someone will let me shoot
in. Needs a table and a living room with a couch.

Help: I need help with lighting and filming in dim light/ candlelight. Does anyone have any
expertise on that? I need someone to hold and shoot the camera.

My job: Script is written, act, direct, edit.

Number of people: 1 person to help with lighting, 1 person to hold the camera, 1 person to help
with audio/ hold mic, 1 leading man. The first 3 jobs can be 1-2 people in any combination if 3
individuals cannot be procured.

The Proposal

(Flourish of a tablecloth. Close ups of a table being set. Plates, utensils, napkins, candles. Table
is set and a girl looks at it analytically, hands on hips. Sighs. Barely there smile.)

(V.O (all voice over’s are done by girl)-David and I had spent so much time together. But that
night was…different.)

David-(From off in the background) “So, the puffs are in the oven. The wine is chilling and…
Whoa” (he comes from behind and looks at the table in awe.)

Girl-“Well it’s not quite done yet. It’s-“

David-“Perfect. Really…perfect” (As he stares at the table and takes it in, she stares at him with
absolute love. He takes her hands and looks at her.) “I want to show you something and it can’t
wait.” (He looks nervous and uneasy.)

Girl- (Concerned.) “Of course…is everything-?“

David- “Yeah… I mean…(nervous laugh)” (He leads her into the living room. There are candles
everywhere. It is the epitome of romance. They sit on the couch and he is rubbing his palms on
his thighs breathing heavily. She is waiting expectantly.)
Girl- “Oh come on, spill.”

David- “Well it’s our 5th anniversary and I wanted to do something special.”

Girl- (Looks around in awe.) “This is special. It’s beyond-“

David- “No I mean something big.”

Girl- (Laughs and smiles jokingly) “It’s no Grand Canyon but-“

David- (He fusses as he tries to get something out of his pocket) Softly he says, “No it’s…I
just… I just need you right now. Cause I am scared and nervous and…”

Girl- “Of course David…Always.”  (She gently touches his shaking hands which are holding a
folded up piece of paper.)

David- (Takes deep breath.) “Ready?”

Girl- “I guess?” (Smiling but a little confused.)

David- (He starts to read) “My dearest Lisa, We have been through so much together and
through all of it, I knew you were the one for me.”- (He keeps going but his voice slowly fades
away.)

(Close-up of girls face. She is melting and staring at him with love.)

(V.O- It’s funny because I always knew he was the one for me too)

Flashback montage- 1. A little boy giving a girl a flower and kissing her on the cheek. She
giggles. 2. Small group of teens in a circle. Camera spins like bottle. Bottle lands on him. She
has pigtails and glasses. She smiles shyly. His friends on each side nudge him and he smiles.
They both lean in and kiss. 3. They are sitting at a table in a restaurant or food court. She is
obviously sad and down in the dumps. He takes two fries from the basket between them. Puts
them in his nose, goes cross eyed. She looks at him and instantly breaks out laughing. 4. Shot
from behind. They are watching the notebook. He is fast asleep on her shoulder. She smiles and
pats him on the head.

(His voice is coming back. Tears are in her eyes now and she is still staring at him with love.)
David-“The time I spend with you is the happiest I can ever hope to be and I want to wake up to
your lovely smile for all the rest of my days.” (He fusses with his other pocket and pulls out a
ring box.)

Girl- (She is in shock. He opens it. Breathless.) “Wow…this is…big.” (The ring is small.)

David- (He laughs nervously.) “I know it’s not much but-“

Girl- (She is looking for the right words to say.)”No it’s not that…what I mean is…” (She has a
moment of profound sadness but she isn’t looking at him.)

David-“Did I do something-?“

Girl- (She looks at him with sadness. He goes silent. She shakes it off. Gently puts a hand on his
cheek and smiles) With all sincerity, she says, “ It’s perfect. It’s perfect.”

David- (He’s unsure.) “Really?”

Girl- (She stands her ground.) “Yes.”

David- “So do you think she’ll like it?” (His pleading eyes longing for reassurance.)

Girl- (She smiles reassuringly) “She would be an idiot if she didn’t.”

David- (He sighs in relief and hugs her.) “You know Emily, I couldn’t have done this without
your help.”

Girl- (She laughs through her tears and runny nose) “Duh.” (Both holding tightly)

David- (He becomes more serious and his tone gets softer.) “Hey Em?”

Girl- “Yeah?”

David- (Quietly, sincerely and strongly)“You’re my best friend. You know that?”

Girl- (She is fighting back more tears and has a look of pure pain. She looks up, closes her eyes.)

(V.O- I always knew David was the one for me. Maybe… I should have told him.)

Girl- After a moment she says, “I know…”

(Pan away from them to a picture on a table in the living room. It is a picture of him with another
girl; Lisa.)
