Nothing in this manual is original; the art of thinking is as old as human life itself.
It is meant as an introduction to critical thinking as grounded on the fundamental
principles of logic; although it is designed not as a showcase of original ideas, the
patterning inputs, the in-depth treatment of some issues, and the “reworking” of examples
for greater cultural relevance are ours.
This manual is a condensed product of several source materials in critical thinking,
language, and logic. Over the years, it underwent several revisions in the forms of
summaries, precis, excerpts, paraphrases, and direct quotations. The idea is to present a
manual for beginning students of critical thinking to help them realize that the function of
language, arguments, and critical reasoning is always part of the everyday world of
human affairs: how it can be used to lead, mislead, and even manipulate us.
As beneficiaries actively sharing knowledge-skills-attitudes to the studentry, the
Department of Philosophy acknowledges the authors of the many fine logic texts and
references, particularly: Carl Cohen and Irving Copi's Introduction to Logic, Gary
