Lab # 3
Wheatstone Bridge

A Wheatstone bridge circuit is shown below.

1. Model this circuit with Multisim.

2. Construct the circuit on your protoboard and measure v0. Compare the measured
v0 to the modeled value.

3. Measure the resistance of each resistor and use these values in your Multisim
model. Compare the modeled v0 to the measured value.

4. Replace one of the resistors with a 1k! potentiometer in series with a 500!
resistor. Adjust the potentiometer to see how low a voltage v0 you can obtain.

5. After disconnecting, measure the resistance of the resistor-potentiometer

combination and use these values in your Multisim model. Compare the modeled v0
to the measured value.
6. Construct the variation shown below.

1k! T 1k!
500! thermistor

7. Adjust the potentiometer until v0 is a minimum.

8. After disconnecting, measure the resistance of the resistor-potentiometer

combination and use these values in your Multisim model. Using your Multisim
model determine the resistance of the thermistor.

9. Reconstruct the circuit. Hold the thermistor between your fingers until the
voltage reaches a maximum.

10. Using your Multisim model estimate the resistance when the voltage is at a
maximum.

11. Assuming that the thermistor obeys the following equation

“ ”
1
β − T1
r = r0 e T 0

with r0 = 1k!, ! = 3540, and T0 = 298K. Calculate the temperature of the thermistor
when you were holding it.
12. Construct the variation shown below using a CdS photoresistor or light-
dependent resistor (LDR). Measure the voltage v0 under different lighting
conditions.
