Firewall

Firewalls are software or hardware that monitors network traffic between a server and host machine to examine for patterns of suspicious activity. Firewalls enforce security policies to provide controlled connectivity between an internal network and the internet. There are three basic types of firewalls: packet filters, circuit level gateways, and application gateways. Firewalls concentrate security, filter protocols and services, hide internal information, require connections through the firewall, provide extended logging, and centralize network service management.

FIREWALLS

ABSTRACT:
Firewall is a software application that watches the traffic in between the
server and host machine and examines against the patterns of suspicious
activity. Typical port scanner software requires a separate installation and a
highly specific and dedicated system to watch packets traveling across a single
network segment. The system only monitors the network segment it is
installed on.

Firewall is a software/hardware which functions in a networked environment

to prevent unauthorized access. Its goal is to provide controlled connectivity
between internet and internal network. This is acquired by enforcing a
security policy .

All firewall systems which were tested were found to be susceptible to packet
spoofing which tricks the server into thinking packets have come from a
trusted host or into using its intrusion-detection counter measures to cut
connectivity to legitimate sites.

The Firewalls and Internet Security defines three basic types of firewalls:
packet filters, circuit level gateways, and application gateways.

Firewalls are mainly used for two purposes:

1. To keep people (worms/crackers) out.

2. To keep people (employees/children) in.

ADVANTAGES:

 Concentration of security: All modified software and logging is located

on the firewall system as opposed to being distributed on many hosts;
 Protocol filtering: where the firewall filters protocols and services that
are either not necessary or that cannot be adequately secured from
exploitation.
 Information hiding: In which a firewall can ``hide'' names of internal
systems or electronic mail addresses, thereby revealing less information
to outside hosts.
 Application gateways: where the firewall requires inside or outside
users to connect first to the firewall before connecting further, thereby
filtering the protocol.
 Extended logging: In which a firewall can concentrate extended logging
of network traffic on one system .
 Centralized and simplified network services management: In which
services such as ftp, electronic mail, gopher, and other similar services
are located on the firewall system(s) as opposed to being maintained on
many systems.
