Calcium Carbonate and Hydrochloric acid Lab

Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to do a reaction between calcium carbonate and hydrochloric
acid and do the appropriate stoichiometric calculations.

Materials:
Small beaker, 0.50 g calcium carbonate, 2.0 mL HCl, burner, ring stand, wire gauze,
balance.

Hypothesis:
How many grams of solid product will be produced from this reaction?
a)Write the balanced equation for this reaction.

b)What is the theoretical yield of the solid product of this reaction? Show your work.

c)State your results above as an “if…then” statement.

Procedures:
1)Get a clean dry beaker. Measure the mass of the beaker. Make a data table and record
all your data.
2)Measure exactly 0.50 g of calcium carbonate.
3)Measure exactly 2.0 mL of 6.0 M HCl
4)Light a wood splint. Add the acid and calcium carbonate. Put the burning wood splint
in the gas above the reaction. Make and record observations.
5)Let the reaction go to completion.
6)light your burner and gentle heat the remain solution. Be careful not to spatter out any
of the contents. Heat until you are sure the contents are dry.
7)Let the beaker and contents cool to touch.
8)Measure the mass of the beaker and contents.
9)Clean up and put everything away.

Data:
Put your data, observations, and calculations in the space below.

1
Calculations and Conclusions: show all your work.
1)How many moles of calcium carbonate were used?

2)What was the solid produced? How do you know? How many moles of this solid were
produced?

3)What is the percent yield of the solid for this lab?

4)What was the gas produced? How do you know?

5)How many moles of that gas should have been produced?

6)How many grams of that gas should have been produced?

7)If that gas has a density of 1.977 g/mL, how many milliliter of the gas did you
produce?

8)If you heat calcium carbonate it will decompose. Calculate how many grams of each
product you would make if you heated 1.000 kg of calcium carbonate. Assume you have
a 93.78% yield.
