Digital Signal Processing Spring 2011 Assignment # 3

This document outlines the assignments for a digital signal processing course. It includes: 1) Examples from Chapter 4 of the required text "Digital Signal Processing" by Proakis that students should study. 2) End of chapter problems 4.9, 4.10, and 4.27 (parts g-j) that are assigned. 3) Five questions about digital signal processing concepts like the discrete time Fourier transform, discrete Fourier transform, and multi-rate signal processing that make up the assignment. Students are to submit their responses to the questions on March 22nd.

Q1.

Following is the Fourier Transform of a discrete time signal x[n]. Determine x[n].
Q2.

Consider the 8-point signal

a) Find a simple, closed form expression for the DTFT of this signal.
b) Sketch and label the zero crossings along the frequency axis clearly.
c) Find a general expression for the 8-point DFT of x[n] in term of its DTFT .
d) Sketch the DFT i.e. of x[n].

Q3.

Consider the multi-rate signal processing system, X(ω) and H(ω) shown below:

Draw and completely label

i) G(ω), where g(n) = x(n/3)

ii) P(ω), where P(ω) = H(ω)G(ω)
(Note that H(ω) is a periodic impulse response with period 2π)
iii) Y(ω), where y(n) = p(2n)

Q4.

A signal x(n) has the following Fourier Transform:

X(ω) =
.

Determine the Fourier Transform of the following signals:

1. x(2n+1)
2. ejπn/2 x(n+2)
3. x(n) cos (0.3πn)
4. x(n) * x(n-1)
Q5.

Consider a discrete time signal x(n) = {1/2, 0,1,0,1/2}

a) Find the expressions for

(i) DTFT
(ii) |X(ω)|
(iii) <X(ω)
b) Sketch the magnitude & phase spectrum of x(n),i.e. |X(ω)| & <X(ω)
c) From the graph of |X(ω)| , identify the values of DFT samples X(k) for
(i) N= 4
(ii) N= 8
d) Sketch the signal x̃(n) that results from applying a 4-point IDFT to the DFT samples X(k)
for k=0,1,2,3.
e) Is there any advantage of using a larger value of N for DFT?
