Know/be able to do the following:
Section 1.1: Chemistry
1)List, define, give examples of five areas of study in chemistry.
2)Compare and contrast pure chemistry and applied chemistry.
3)Explain the influence of technology on chemistry and give a couple of examples.
4)Name and explain three general reasons to study chemistry.
Section 1.2: Chemistry Far and Wide
5)Name and discuss six main areas where chemistry has a major impact: materials,
energy, medicine and biotechnology, agriculture, the environment, and the universe.
Section 1.3: Thinking Like a Scientist
6)Discuss a brief history of the scientific processes as related to chemistry. Include
contributions of the following people or groups of people: Aristotle, Democritus,
Alchemists, Galileo, Antoine Lavoisier, John Dalton, Amedo Avogadro, John Dalton,
and Dimitri Mendeleev.
7)Discuss the scientific method (process). Be able to discuss at least six steps of the
process.
8)Be able to compare and contrast scientific law and scientific theory. Give a couple
examples of each one.
9)Discuss the importance of collaboration and communication in the scientific process.
Section 1.4: Problem Solving in Chemistry
10) Name and implement the steps in solving numeric problems: analyze, calculate, and
evaluate.
