Basic Arithmetic Definitions

• operation: a mathematical process, generally add, subtract, multiply or


divide.

Addition:
• addition: the process of uniting two or more numbers into one sum.
• addend: numbers being added in addition

addend+ addend=sum

• sum, or amount: the result of adding two or more numbers


• equal sign: denotes the quantities between which it stands are equal.

Subtraction
• subtraction: the process of finding the difference between two numbers
• minuend: The number that is to be subtracted from.

minuend - subtrahend = difference

• subtrahend: The number to be subtracted.


• difference, or remainder: the number left after subtraction.

Multiplication
• multiplication: a mathematical operation that indicates how many times a
number is added to itself.
• multiplicand: a number that is to be multiplied by another number. Also
known as a factor.

multiplicand x multiplier=product

• multiplier: a number indicating how many times the multiplicand is


multiplied. Also known as a factor.
• product: the result obtained when multiplying.

Division
• division: the process of finding how many times one number is contained in
another.
• dividend: the number to be divided.

dividend % divisor=quotient

• divisor: the number by which we divide.


• quotient: the number of times the divisor is contained in the dividend.
• remainder: the number left over after dividing
