of fear or anxiety associated with either real
or anticipated communication with another
person or persons
Two Types of Communication
Apprehension

• Trait Anxiety

• Situational Anxiety
– Public Speaking Anxiety
Why people are nervous?
• Novelty
• Done in formal settings
• Often done from a subordinate position
• Conspicuous or obvious
• Done in front of an audience that is unfamiliar
• A unique situation in which the degree of
attention paid to the speaker is quite
noticeable.
How should we overcome
nervousness?
• BE PREPARED by doing research
• PRACTICE your speech
• Have REALISTIC expectations about your delivery
• Practice VISUALIZATION and AFFIRMATIONS
• Find points of CONNECTION with your audience
• Be a GOOD MEMBER of an audience YOURSELF
