Brain Computer Interface

Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) allow humans to control external devices using only their brain signals. BCI systems detect brain activity through electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) electrodes on the skull. The signals are translated to control outputs like a video game, change TV channels, or move a robotic arm. While promising, BCI require further development to overcome drawbacks like weak signals, interference, and the need for implants. Researchers are working to improve BCI to restore speech or allow disabled people to control wheelchairs or prosthetics using only their thoughts.

BCI Innovators

Neural Signals is developing technology to restore speech to disabled

people.
Nasa has researched a similar system, although it reads electric signals
from the nerves in the mouth and throat area, rather than directly from
the brain.
Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems is marketing the BrainGate, a
neural interface system that allows disabled people to control a
wheelchair, robotic prosthesis or computer cursor.
Japanese researchers have developed a preliminary BCI that allows the
user to control their avatar in the online world Second World.
