Stress management

Becoming a professional practitioner undoubtedly creates ‘stress’ at different times.

What areas of the course have, or do you think will, create stress for you?
As students we face many challenges and stressors.  However as a nursing student we
are likely to experience even more stress than our friends and colleagues enrolled in
other programs. In addition to contending with assignments, grades, long hours of
studying, work, family and other personal commitments we are also faced with the
challenges of clinical practice. To me clinical practice are one of the most anxiety
producing components in nursing program. Lack of experience, fear of making
mistakes, difficult patients,  discomfort at being evaluated by registered nurses,
worrying about giving patients the wrong information or medication  and concern
about possibly harming a patient are just a few of the stressors for me at the beginning
of my nursing career.

How do you plan to cope with stress?

I will try to incorporating practices that can reduce some of the stress associated with
all of these challenges as I believe it is important if not essential to my well
being. Stress management and self-care practices will help to survive through nurse
training and will also provide a foundation for creating a balanced life. I will establish
healthy habits that will serve me for a life time!

What do I need to do?

The foundation for a stress management program is incorporating healthy habits into
your daily life. I will set limits and boundaries, establish a support mechanism or
group that will regularly reinforce my healthy habits of self-care
I believe such practice will benefit me throughout the entire life.

How will I know when I have achieved it?

Hopefully I will feel happier, more relaxed and stop bringing my work related worries
home.
