Introduction into Topology (Prof. Urs Frauenfelder)

Assignment 1

1. Let X be a set and d1 , d2 two metrics on X. Assume that there exists

a real number c > 0, such that for all x, y ∈ X
1
d1 (x, y) ≤ d2 (x, y) ≤ cd1 (x, y).
c
Show that d1 and d2 induce the same topology on X.
Pn
2. (a) On Rn we consider the metric d(x, y) = kx − yk = i=1 (xi −
yi )2 , x, y ∈ Rn . Show

B1 (x) = {y ∈ Rn : d(x, y) ≤ 1} for x ∈ Rn .

(b) Show that in a metric space (X, d) the inclusion

B1 (x) ⊂ {y ∈ X : d(x, y) ≤ 1} for x ∈ X

holds.
(c) Find an example of a metric space for which the inclusion from
(b) is strict.
3. Assume that (X, dX ) and (Y, dY ) are metric spaces and f : X → Y is
a map. Prove the equivalence of the following assertions
(a) f : (X, OdX ) → (Y, OdY ) is continuous.
(b) For every x ∈ X and every ε ∈ R, ε > 0, there exists δ ∈ R, δ > 0,
such
dX (x, y) < δ ⇒ dY (f (x), f (y)) < ε
for all y ∈ X.
4. Prove or find a counterexample of the following assertion: Let (X, OX ), (Y, OY )
be topological spaces and let f : (X, OX ) → (Y, OY ) be a continuous
and bijective map, then f is a homeomorphism.
