Lesson 5

The document discusses the relationship between sports, money, and sponsorship. It notes that famous athletes earn a lot of money, though their careers are short, and many donate to charitable causes. It also explains that large sporting events like the World Cup have huge television audiences, and companies pay millions to sponsor such events. Athletes need sponsors to provide clothing and equipment, and often have to display sponsor logos, though sponsors do not have to provide this support. The document uses tennis player Maria Sharapova as an example, noting her multi-million dollar sponsorship deal with Nike.

Sport has become big business for both players and sponsors. Famous sportsmen and women earn a lot
of money. Is this moral in a world that has so many poor people? There are two answers to this question.
Firstly, life as a sportsman or woman is quite short. Secondly, many sportsmen and women give money to
the poor, although they don’t have to. Is this answer enough?

One of the biggest sporting events is the World Cup for football. It has a TV audience of 35 billion.
Companies like Adidas, Nike, and Coca Cola have to pay more than $20 million to sponsor a sporting
event. Sportsmen and women need to find sponsors and then they have to wear their logos on clothes.
Sponsors don’t need to pay for these clothes but many do.

Maria Sharapova is a famous Russian tennis player. She has got several sponsors such as Nike, Prince
and NEC computers. She has a special agreement with Nike. Nike has to sponsor her clothing which is
worth about $300,00 a year.
