Introduction To Structural Analysis

This document discusses the analysis and design of structures. It outlines the following key stages in the complete design of a structure: (1) developing a general layout, (2) investigating the loads, (3) performing a stress analysis to determine internal forces and displacements, and (4) selecting suitable elements and their connections based on the stress analysis and design codes. The general layout is selected from alternatives and involves choosing a structural type and material. Investigating the loads includes determining exceptional load conditions. The stress analysis is used to find maximum possible stresses. These stages are interrelated and may need to be performed simultaneously by an experienced engineer.

 The word structure has various meanings.  The design of a structure involves many considerations,
 By an engineering structure we mean roughly among which are four major objectives that must be

(2) Investigating the loads

 Before a refined structural analysis can be carried out, it is

necessary to determine the loads for which a given structure should
be designed.

 General information about the loads imposed on a structure is usually

given in the specifications and codes.

 However, it is part of the designer's responsibility to specify the

load conditions and to take care of exceptional cases.
