•A node is where 2 or more circuit elements meet

(b,c,d,e).
•A closed loop or closed path (e.g. abef, or bcde).
•A branch or path is an open loop (e.g. ab, abe).

•Kirchoff’s 1st law (current law) The algebraic sum of all currents
entering a node is zero.
•i.e. at node b i - i5 - i3 = 0 i = i5 + i3
•Kirchoff’s 2nd law (voltage law) The algebraic sum of the p.d.s in
any closed loop is zero.
•i.e. loop abef v – v1 – v2 –v3 = 0 v = v1 + v2 + v3
•i.e. loop bcde v3 – v5 – v6 –v4 = 0 v3 = v4 + v5 + v6
Preview of Lecture 3
• In lecture 3 we will look at the concept of
effective resistance for resistors in series
and parallel.
• We will learn how to simplify resistor
networks by using resistor reduction
techniques.
