• Both are actually interchangeable but people

• Film refers to artistic, theoretical or technical
aspects while Movie refers to pure
entertainment
FILM GENRES
ACTION FILMS
• Usually include high energy, big-
budget physical stunts and chases
• Good guy vs Bad guy scenario
• James Bond Series is an example of a
classic action film
ADVENTURE FILMS
• Have exciting stories, with new experiences
or exotic locales
• Very similar to action films
• The Mummy & Indiana Jones are examples of
this genre
COMEDY
• Has light-hearted plots
• Designed to amuse laughter
• Action comedy, horror comedy & sci-
fi comedy films are sub genres
• Safety Last was named as the
greatest comedy movie of all time
• 1923 film
• Starring Harold Lloyd and Mildred Davis
CRIME
• Are developed around the sinister actions of
criminals or mobsters, particularly bank
robbers, underworld figures
• The Italian Job & The Town are examples of
Crime movies
DRAMA
• Serious, plot-driven presentations
• Portrays realistic life situations
• Largest film genre
• Biopics, Melodrama & Romance
are major sub genres
• Examples: The Hurt Locker &
Changeling
DOCUMENTARY
• Intended to document some aspect of reality
• Are mostly non-fiction
• Has been very commercially succesful in the
21st century
• Examples: An Inconvenient Truth & Supersize
Me
EPIC
• Emphasizes human drama on a grand
scale
• Typically entail high cost production
and a sweeping musical score
• Appeal to a very large audience
• Titanic and The Lord of the Rings which
ranked #2 and #3 on the list of the
highest grossing films of all time are
epics
HORROR
• Unsettling movies that strive to elicit the
emotions of fear, disgust and horror from
viewers
• Modern horror uses gore as a way to elicit fear
• The next trend in horror films is said to be
documentaries/mockumentaries.
• Examples: Saw Series, The Exorcist & The Blair
Witch Project
MUSICALS
• Are cinematic forms that emphasize
full-scale scores or song and dance
routines in a significant way
• Musical Comedy & Concert films are
subgenres
• Examples: The Sound of Music &
Mamma Mia
SCIENCE FICTION
• Films with impossible scenarios, futuristic
concepts & unknowable forces
• Examples: Star Wars saga & 2012
WAR
• Genre concerned with warfare
• Mostly focused on prisoner of
wars, covert operations and
military training
• Anti war films
– Films that bring to the viewers the
horror of war often from a
political/ideological perspective
– Examples: Schindler’s List &
Saving Private Ryan
• Examples: Black Hawk Down &
Children of Men
WESTERN
• devoted to telling stories set primarily in the
latter half of the 19th century in
the American Old West
• Examples: No Country for Old Men &
Brokeback Mountain

• One of the earliest movie industry in Asia
• Started on January 1, 1897
• Un Homme Au Chapeau (Man with a hat)
was the first movie shown in the
Philippines
• Modern filipino films are focused on Love
stories, Comedy & drama films while
Classic filipino films are war & action

• Animation originating from Japan


• Can emphasize visual styles
• Massively popular in asian countries
