project
apron

A creative and messy gal always needs to have a fun

apron on hand. Colorful handmade fabrics in different patterns are

perfect for stacking ruffles and creating a fun, flirty ruffled apron.

I handpainted each fabric in one or two colors with different motifs

before assembling. Wear this apron in the kitchen, in the studio, or

just around the house.

Fi n i s h e d S i z e Materials
17" × 17" (43 × 43 cm) apron
• 18" × 18" (45.5 × 45.5 cm) piece of plain
with 20" (51 cm) ties
woven fabric for the foundation panel of the
apron
• 6 strips of painted, printed, and altered fabric
for ruffles, each 4" × 24" (10 × 61 cm) or
ruffles as shown or 4" × 36" (10 × 91.5 cm) for
fuller ruffles
• 5" × 58" (12.5 × 147.5 cm) strip of painted or
printed fabric for waistband and ties
• Thread in desired colors

Tools
• Fabric scissors
• Pins
• Sewing machine

1 Hem the bottom and sides of the 18" × 18" (45.5 × 45.5 cm)
panel by folding under ¼" (6 mm) of the fabric and then
folding over again. Press and machine stitch.

2 Hem the sides and the bottom of each of the 6 ruffle fabric
strips in the same fashion.

3 Using a long straight machine stitch, stitch along the top of

the unhemmed edge of each of the fabric strips, about ½"
(1.3 cm) from the edge. Do not backstitch. (Note: If mak-
ing fuller ruffles, add a second row of long straight stitches
about ¼" from the edge of the fabric.)

4 Pull the bobbin thread or threads along the unhemmed

edge of each ruffle to gather it to about 18" (45.5 cm) long
(fig. 1).
Fig. 2 Pin first ruffle to cover bottom hemmed
5 Lay the foundation panel right side up. Pin the top edge of
one ruffle to the fabric, adjusting it so the bottom edge of
edge of apron panel.

the ruffle extends slightly below the bottom of the founda-

tion panel, and adjusting gathers so that the sides of the
ruffle meet the edges of the foundation panel (fig. 2).

6 Stitch the ruffle to the foundation panel along the top edge
of the ruffle.
Fig. 3 Each ruffle should slightly overlap the ruffle
beneath, covering stitching.
7 Pin and sew the next ruffle to the foundation panel, mak-
ing sure that the ruffle overlaps the top edge of the ruffle
below it.

8 Repeat with the remaining ruffles. The top ruffle should
fall about 1" (2.5 cm) below the top edge of the foun-
dation panel (fig. 3).

9 To make the waistband and ties, fold the 5" × 58"

(12.5 × 147.5 cm) piece of fabric in half lengthwise,
wrong sides together.

10 Stitch around all the raw edges of the folded strip with
a closely spaced zigzag stitch.

11 Pin the strip to the top of the apron on the right side,
matching the top edges of the ruffle and apron, and
matching the center of the apron and the center of the
waistband so that there is equal length remaining for
the ties on each side.

12 Sew the waistband/tie strip across its width with

several rows of stitches.

variations
• Leave all of the edges of the apron and
ruffles raw and let them fray over time.

• Vary the depth and/or number of ruffles, or

make fuller ruffles.

• Change the color palette; make each ruffle a

different color.
