Personal Statement Alexander Meinhardt

"What is the likely impact of the UK government's introduction of home information packs on the
residential property market?" is a typical topic discussed around my parents' dinner table due to my
father's involvement in venture capital investments. It became obvious to me that an understanding
of economic theory and models is not only vital in making investment or management decisions, but
constitutes a distinct way of thinking, which is applicable to most decisions. A particular interest of
mine is the role of government in the economy and the effects of economic policy. This is why I have
chosen a topic in Economics for the IB Extended Essay. I am comparing US public policy reactions to
the Great Depression of 1929 with those to the current economic crisis. Visiting public lectures at
LSE has contributed to my attraction to Economics as an intellectually stimulating, highly varied and
internationally connected field of work. Studying Economics at degree level would enable me to
develop the theoretical and philosophical framework necessary for evaluating the social as well as
cultural implications of economic policy.

For a recent course work in Mathematics I managed to find an unusual and highly accurate way of
modelling a complex data series through a combination of multiple functions, which impressed my
teacher. The required accuracy and attention to detail paired with a good capacity for logical and
abstract thinking play towards my strengths. I also enjoy Physics as it provides me with a good
opportunity to apply Mathematics to explain outcomes of experiments and solve related problems.
In addition, I am currently taking a distance learning Mathematics A-level course alongside my IB
studies and I am committed to pursuing this route. My History course helps me to further develop
my ability to reason and it gives me an opportunity to research, think independently and critically
analyse material. I especially enjoy historiographical debates. The work I do for my history course
has also helped me to improve my essay writing skills. I find studying languages fascinating as it
enables me to develop a deeper understanding of the respective cultures and it allows me to
communicate effectively when abroad. Thorough analysis in English has led me to read texts in a
different way, giving me access to their deeper meaning.

I have gained work experience in the course of three company internships in different fields: design
and architecture, car manufacturing and process automation in the UK and Germany. This provided
me with a first hand impression of management functions in the areas of sales and marketing,
customer service, quality control, logistics and product development. In addition, I experienced the
importance of integrating into diverse teams, communicating effectively and dealing with time
pressure. On one occasion, while doing a work placement at Daimler Benz, I encountered the impact
of government subsidized short-time work on companies in Germany and the resulting management
issues, which illustrated to me the practical role and limitations of public policies and labour laws.

The demands of the IB course require me to manage my time well and set clear priorities. I was
selected as a member of the college volleyball team, which allows me to experience the joy and
impact of good teamwork, and I have gained some leadership experience when captaining the team.
Yacht racing provided me with possibly an even more intense team experience and I went through a
steep learning curve when qualifying to take full responsibility for a sailing yacht and its crew. As a
competitive swimmer I pursued my goals through self-discipline and persistence. My biggest
achievement as a swimmer was completing the 10km "Swimathon", raising a significant amount of
money for charity.
