POLYNOMIALS

Time allowed 1 hour 30 minutes

Total marks: 44

Write answers with FULL working in separate sheets

Question 1 (4 marks)

i) Show that if α is a root of multiplicity r of P(x) = (x – α)r S(x), then P(α) =

P’(α) = 0
ii) Suppose that (x - 1)2 is a factor of x5 + 2x4 + ax3 + bx2. Find the values of
a and b.

Question 2 (4 marks)

The polynomial P(x) = x3 + 4x2 - 2 has roots α, β and γ. Find the value of α2 + β2 +
γ2 and hence find the value of α3 + β3 + γ3

Question 3 (5 marks)

The sum of three numbers is -3. The sum of the squares of the three numbers
is 29 and the product of these numbers is -6. Derive a polynomial equation
that contains these three numbers as its roots and hence determine the values
of these three numbers.

Question 4 (4 marks)

The equation x4 + 4x3 + 5x2 + 2x -20 = 0 has roots α, β, γ and δ over the complex
field.

i) Show that the equation whose roots are α + 1, β + 1, γ + 1 and δ + 1 is

given by x4 – x2 – 20 = 0
ii) Hence, or otherwise solve the equation x4 + 4x3 + 5x2 + 2x -20 = 0

Question 5 (2 marks)

If the equation x3 + 3px + q = 0 has double root, for p < 0 and q > 0, prove that
q2 + 4p3 = 0
Question 6 (3 marks)

The equation x3 + bx2 + x + 2 = 0 where b is a real, has roots α, β and γ

i) Find an expression for α2 + β2 + γ2 in terms of b

ii) Hence determine the set of values of b such that x3 + bx2 + x + 2 = 0 has
all roots being real

Question 7 (3 marks)

the polynomial equation x4 – 3x3 – 11x2 + 53x – 60 = 0 has 2 + i as one of its

roots. Find all the other roots of this equation.

Question 8 (10 marks)

i) Find the solutions to z5 + 1 = 0 in modulus-argument form (2 marks)

π 3π
ii) Show that z5 + 1 = (z + 1)(z2 – 2zcos 5 + 1) (z2 – 2zcos 5 + 1) (2 marks)
iii) Using the fact that z5 + 1 = (z + 1)(z4 – z3 + z2 – z + 1) and the result in part
(ii), prove that
π 3π π 3π
cos 5 + cos 5 = ½ and cos 5 cos 5 = - ¼ (3 marks)

π 3π
iv) hence find the exact values of cos 5 and cos 5 (3
marks)

Question 9 (5 marks)

Consider the polynomial P(x) = x3 – 3px2 + 4q, where p and q are positive real
constants

i) Show that the stationary points of y = P(x) are (0, 4q) and (2p, 4q -4p 3)
ii) Hence show that P(x) has one real root if q > p3

Question 10 (4 marks)

i) If α and β are the complex roots of the equation t2 – 2t + 2 = 0 find α

and β
ii) Hence show that if cotӨ = x + 1 then (x + α)n – (x + β)n/ α – β =
sin nӨ / sinnӨ
